Can the NO-RPM gauge cluster be changed to a SE gauge cluster?
I have the one without the RPM gauge. Even if it's an ATX, I'd like to use one with RPMs.
It's a '95 Contour GL. Will it be as easy as swapping the cluster (will the OBD-I be able to drive the RPM meter), or will it be really complicated (splicing wires, changing stuff, ...) (I'm fine with electronic/electrical stuff, I've studied in Avionics, I just want to konw if it's a quick *swap the cluster* thing or not)
Now, for the other question that can probably get expensive fast, what's involved in doing an ATX to a MTX swap? I'd like to get a 5-speed tranny in it. (besides replacing the shifter, adding a clutch pedal, etc...)
Sorry, I've went through all the FAQs and stuff, can it be done without getting really expensive? I mean, it's a 10-years old 4-banger.

yes, i just did it with my 96 gl', the cluster is plug and play.. but it must be from a zetec. atleast it should be [plug and play, i can't say much about the 95.
5 speed you need the mtx75 tranny and subframe along with the pcm.

NO! you cannot get a Gauge cluster from a pre98 SE with a Tach to work with a Non-SE contour. The only reason being the fact that every SE in 95-97 had a V6. The V6 cluster does not work with the I4. Since you have a 95 you run the chances of having a cable driven gauge cluster. IN which case you would have to run a wire for the tach to work. You can tell if you're cluster is cable driven if you look at the all the way right number on the trip odometer, if its white, then you have electronic, if its orange then you have cable driven
If you do have an electronic guage cluster (which makes this a lot easier), then you can go to a local bone yard, or check E-bay for a Gauge cluster thats for the I4 WITH tach. You can tell the difference between the I4 cluster and V6 cluster very Easily. The I4 w/tach has a Redline of 6500 RPM's. the V6 has 6700 RPM's. As well as the V6 tach says "V6" on it. the I4 tach has a very small "4" written below the tach dial.

The only Cable Driven speedos are the early 95's the odometer push thingy is on the opposite side of the gauge.

Could he just find a Zetec cluster with a tach & swap in his speedo/odo module?
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I dunno about that, but the electronic speedometer works...
Someone recently found out that the VSS is already there and a wire run to the cluster harness... his mechanical-to-electronic speedometer conversion was plug and play.
Dunno about that tach, though... I would assume it would work since I know a 96/97 has the tach signal already in the harness... but I can't be positive about it working in a 95!
Otherwise, if he finds an early 95 Zetec w/tach (all Mystiques have em), then he's definately good to go.

Well Dan, looks pretty good that you can get a speedo/tach combo working just fine if you pull one out of a 4 cylinder car.

here's what i found in trying to do a V6 cluster in a I4: - the tach is off..by a lot, and no, moving the needle won't work because it is off in varying degrees as the rpm's change. - the speedo will not work. you can't put your speedo into the gauge cluster since the plugs are different. and i tried swapping boards, it can be done, but the speedo still doesn't work. - the gas gauge will be off, trust me.
--the only way this will work is if you find a Contour "Sport" (I4) you can rob the gauge pod out of or if you find a I4 mystique with a speedo--
i tried just about everything to make it work and i just wound up throwing it away and putting my old one back in my car as i search for one that will plug and play.

caleb, lotsa bone yards around your area. Spend a little time on the phone or check out car-part.com to find an instrument cluster and make some phone calls. You should be able to pick one up for $20 or sup'm.
BTW, springs should get to you by Tuesday.
