So I was on my way home from work tonight and was going kinda fast and a cop spotted me and pulled me over. 45 in a 30. He stated, "so your radar detector didn't go off huh?." He told me I work this area alot and use a laser gun which your radar detector is useless against. So my question is what is a good detector that can pick up these laser guns? I have a $80 Cobra that stated it could pick up lasers but obviously I got what I paid for. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

300 dollar escort passport or 400 dollar V1. Your choice.

Valentine is your best bet.
There was a real good thread on this at Escape Central a year or two ago. Laser is aimed at your license plate, the most reflective part on your car. The policeman aims the laser at the license plate and with an instant on gun, the burst may be quick enough that you don't get any warning even with a high dollar detector. His solution was to remove the plate and replace it with a color copy (no sparkly reflective material). Put it under a clear plastic cover and it would be very hard to notice.

The escort passport 8500 x50 is a great detector and can be had for $250 brand new. The v1 is just as good but with arrows (you really need to know where the cop is? I just slow it down if it's warning) and higher cost. Laser can still get you (as can instant on radar). It has such a narrow beam, you often don't pick up until after you're hit. With that said, I've detected laser while speeding and got on the brakes and wasn't pulled over. The best defense to laser is a good laser jammer and/or a product called veil (paint your headlights and other shiny parts with it). These cut down the distance the laser can pick your car up. Though you'll still need a good detector to use with these. Also, darker color cars are better than light color cars.

Nothing is going to protect you from instant-on lasers except driving slower.

Thats what I am starting to think. I am just glad the cop let me off with a warning.

exactly. If your radar detector picks up a laser, its already too late.

Except the things I listed (laser jammer and veil), depending on your distance. By the time they can get a reading when you're using a good jammer and veil, then you SHOULD have already seen them, laser detector gone off, and you slowed down to the speed limit. And often laser (and radar) are not ran in instant on mode. The only time this is really feasible is in very light traffic and you're just a lone car speeding along. Usually constant on is used to check speed of every car passing through. And even constant on is hard for a detector to pick up quick enough, but you do get lucky sometimes and catch it bouncing off other cars before it hits you.

This is highly illegal.
