I am currently swaping out my daughter's contour engine and ATX with one out of a 96 Mystique. Thought it would be straight forward disconnecting all the wiring including the computer. Well, that turned out that everything is all cool except there is another component on the fire wall of the contour that is not on the Mystique. So there is no connector on the engine from the Mystique computer harness. Can anyone tell me what this is? The part is located on teh driver's side of the black panel on the fire wall. Thanks in advance for the help.

Greg

You have a pretty big problem my friend... The 95 Contour/Mystiques were OBD-I. Anything after that was OBD-II Its a completely different computer technology, and if memory serves me correctly, you need to have an engine out of a 95 to work. Of corse, there may also be a way around it that im not aware of... is it a Zetec (I4) or duratec (V6)?

It is a Zetec. I do have the computer from the other car. Would that help?

Skip the computer junk, buy the carburetion kit, and find a bribable inspection guy.

In all serious nature however, if it's possible, just take the wiring harness and computer from one car and put it in the new one. viable?

i think that you can go two ways, you either take and swao all the engine harnesses from the old engine to the new engine and go from there, I think the only extra thing you would have is a cat monitoring sensor

or you could get all the wiring from the 96, I think you would have to get the in dash stuff also because that would all possible be different and swap it into the 95

so I din't see why you can't swap all the old sensor and wiring over to the "new" engine and it wouldn't work. luckly you didn't have a 98+ engine so you have no VCT to worry about, so I believe the engines are the same

First off thanks for all the responses.

Second, I was looking at pulling the old harness and installing it on the new engine. You guys know how brittle the wiring crap is. So, my second thought would be just pulling the computer from the 96 and didng it that way. Isn't the OBII mostly engine programming? If that is the case then with the entire harness and computer, I shouldn't have any real issues.

I am also looking into swapping the Mystique instrument cluster to the 95 contour, is there anything from the inside that would have to be wired in from the old?

Thanks Again
Greg

All is well now. I swapped the old harness to the new engine. Everything is running great. I had to plug one of the vacuum ports on the back of the intake manifold.

By the way, the electronic speedo from the mystique works perfectly using the VSS from a 96 model.

Thanks to everyone that point out the wiring harness problem.
