My 1999 2.5L V6 Contour is fun to drive, but I have suffered from poor gas milage (about 17MPG no matter if it is highway or city driving). Anyway, the check engine light came on a few months back. it was when I was doing about 45 minutes of highway driving. After some shorting in-city driving, the light went off. As soon as I hit the highway for over 30 minutes, the light would come back on... Repeat a few times.
Anyway, I was at a point where I couldn't do anything about getting it fixed, and now the light stays on all of the time. I just started a new job and want to get this fixed, but I am not 100% sure what the problem is. I stopped by AdvanceAuto Parts and had them read the codes.
Here are the codes P1131 - Fuel Air Metering P1151 - Fuel Air Metering P0171 - Running too lean Bank 1 P0174 - Running too lean Bank 2
Does this mean oxy sensors need replacing, or could it be a hose? Something else? Should I try and fix it myself? I have done a lot of basic car work such as oil changes, brakes, alternators (not on my Contour), spark plugs, plug wires, and such, but I always had someone to help me the first time. Should I fork over the big bucks and have a shop do it?
Thanks all!
Nick

hey there good buddy. i had the same issues i dont rember what 2 they were but yes you have 2 bad 02 sensors that are stuck on lean. if you run lean for to long you can burn valves but thats a long time. basicaly all you have to do is get the 2 sensors replaced and every thing should be better. i did not do the switch my self but the 2 that went bad on my car were hard to get to so they say but its an easy fix

The odds of both sensors being out at the same time would be slim, but not impossible.. I would look for:
vacuum leaks causing your system to ACTUALLY be lean. or: one code to be a culprit and the others to be secondary to that code..
Find out if you are indeed lean, or not, and go from there.

You guys are totally overlooking the fuel metering issue. to me it's either a huge vaccuum leak or the MAF is dirty as hell, or toasted. I would check for vacuum leaks (loud hissing around the top of the engine at idle) and clean the MAF (take off the filter housing and spray electrical contact cleaner for a god 10 seconds in the sampling tube to clean the wires).

Okay.. so I didn't say the MAF would be the culprit, I just said "a" code.. my bad.. .How did I overlook what you just repeated that I just said?

UPDATE:
OK. I just remembered that when the Check Engine Light first came on (and would shut off shortly there after), I had stopped at a different Advance Auto and had them run the codes. I found a printout in my glove compartment.
These are the codes from a couple of months ago.
P1151 - HO2S Bank 2 Sensor 1 - Insuff. Switching - Lean Mean P1519 - Intake Manifold Runner Stuck Closed
Sorry about adding this to the mix, but I didn't think that I still had the code printout until I dug around more for it.
I am going to pop the hood next and listen for a hissing sound...

The second code isn't good. You should clean out the LIM as it has probably gooped the secondaries shut - hopefully you haven't fried the IMRC box in the process, although I'm sure you could find a replacement in the classifieds.

OK. I could not hear any noticable hissing sound under the hood. Nothing over the normal engine noise. I was also impressed with the overall condition of everything under the hood cosmetically. The hoses still look almost brand new, and everything is pretty darn clean still.
OK, now some of the stupid questions.
Forgive me for asking, but....
What is:
LIM (Lower Intake Manifold?)
IMRC (Intake Manifold Runner Control?)
MAF (Mass AirFlow sensor?)
Am I right?
Also, on the first test that had the P1519 code, their code-reader was asking up that day they said. It even returned a P1000 - OBD Systems Readiness Test Not Complete which is what they said was when their reader was acting up. So I am not sure if that was a correct reading or not.
