hey guys, just wondered if any of you have heard anything about inflating your tires with nitrogen as opposed to plain old air, and if you have, what you think of it. We just got a machine for doing this at the dealership where I work and it sounds interesting enough. I filled up my snows figuring it can't hurt. Supposedly nitrogen is a dryer, more inert, and more stable gas than regular air so it reacts less to temperature changes keeping a more consistant pressure, and also doesn't oxidize the rubber, which helps keep the air from permeating the sidewall. Just looking for thoughts and/or discussion.

Waste of money, time, everything. No real reason to do it. Air is 70% nitrogen anyways.

Looks like you answered your own question.
I go to UTI in phoenix right now, and in my undercar class(steering, susp., wheels, and tires.) we watched a video that said air will just about be obsolete in like ten years, that the nitrogen is so much better. It also said that alot of trucks have been using it for the past couple years.

It is real common in race cars and I understand that all airliners use notrogen only.
Personally, I'm not having enough trouble with ordinary air to motivate me to spend extra money for nitrogen. Very interesting concept though.

I'm thinking bout using helium. Think about it. Weight reduction.

It's about as good as completely dry air in terms of performance (resistance to pressure increase with heat).
It's the water in air that causes it to expand with heat. Most air pumps have some moisture in the air. That's what causes the pressure to rise when the tire heats up. Ideally, you don't want the temperature to decrease at all.
Another nice thing is nitrogen escapes from tires slower than normal air (bigger molecules). This means you need to check it more often.
If you want to try it, go to your local Costco. Most have switched over to nitrogen. It's free. Deflate your tires as much as possible, refill, repeat.

We have a machine at work, and I already filled mine up for free. I thought it was kinda cool myself.

Some of the higher end racing wheels have dual valves for replacing the air with nitrgen at the track. The dual valves make it easier to pump the nitrgen in one valve while forcing the air out the other or so i have been told. example these are on my sons highly modded A4...Kosi Racing K1 TS

Purchase tires with see through sidewalls.
Embed sidewall with tungstan filament and attach to battery
Fill tire with nitrogen
Now you have the ultimate light bulb!
