According to Tirerack, KDW2s are about $55 less each and outperforms and last longer than the PSs.

Thats not saying much. There are tons of tires with better performance for less than the PS.
No offense, you like those PSs its your money. Spend it how you please!

I like it because I have PS A/S on my stockers currently..I love PS and I'd vow to get them for my rims
and the KDW2's are Y-rated..Mine are Z..really isnt a huge difference but i guess it was persnoal preference

The KDW2 can only outperform the PS in the wet. In dry, the PS is much more of a competitor of the KD, BF Goodrich's top performing dry tire. The KDW2 gives up a lot of dry grip in favor of wet and treadlife.

Exactly! People get oo caught up in the "Z-rated" stuff.
I agree though, the KDW2s are a bit on the loud side.

Z rating: under the older system introduced 1999 spec on tires above 149mph
Y rating: newer system, tire spec at 186mph
(Y) rating: newer system, tire spec at >186mph

I was agreeing with the Manch's statement below:

He was probably clarifying the common misconception that Z-rated tires are the highest performing.

You can't go wrong with a Michelin Tire. I have had almost every brand of tire and I am sold on Michelin. You can argue cost and all of the other factors, but it comes down to personal prefrence, and personal experience.

I suppose. My personal experience with Michlins (a few months ago on my Honda Accord EX coupe): They suck. Worst suckage of all has been Goodyear... In my experience. GY will never find their way onto my cars ever again.
I've had good luck with BFG, Yoks, and Khumo is OK for a cheap-o tire.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer tells you little. Every manufacturer makes good tires and bad. Michelin makes the awesome Pilot Sport Cup & PS2, as well as really poorly performing ones like the MX4.

No, it doesn't come down to personal preference. This isn't the color of the car, it's a physical component that has a certain job to do, and you can judge it by how well it does it's job. I'm having trouble understanding how you could even think that.

No. It comes down to how the tire performs, cost, and quality. Things that can be objectively measured.

Sivart, you are incorrect - see Kremit and AutoX's replies. It's not subjective like what looks good.

Personal preference still does play a part in performance though. For instance, some may prefer to sacrifice a bit of ultimate grip for a smoother, more progressive breakaway characteristic. This would lead someone to choose the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup over the Yokohama Advan A048. To some, dry weather grip is king. To others, wet weather or snow is a consideration. There's also breakaway characteristics, treadwear, price, heat resistance (ahem, Falken Azenis), appearance, warranty, and other qualities. Every tire is a compromise. It's just a matter of picking the best one for your car and your preferences for your pocketbook.

Missing the W rating.
Here's the speed rating list:
Notice that an SVT will need either a V, Z, W, or Y rated tire if you plan on topping it out, otherwise you risk your tires breaking down and you ending up all screwed up.
Also make sure you're not out on the interstate going over the rating of your winter tires!
L: 75mph
M: 81mph
N: 87mph
P: 93mph
Q: 99mph
R: 106mph
S: 112mph
T: 118mph
U: 124mph
H: 130mph
V: 149mph
Z: "+149mph"
W: 168mph
Y: 186mph
?: 168mph+ <--- I see this on a few sites, dunno what it's about...
I did hear that cars capable of going that fast usually have custom tires on them.

Speed ratings are for going that speed for a decent period of time. You can go faster than the speed rating and the tire isn't going to instantly blow out.

For whatever application I'm running, I can easily find better than the Michs for far less money - as is being demonstrated, or at least expressed, in this thread.

Friend of mine's parents have had the Pilots on a few of their cars. Bot cars used the same size,235/45/18. The first car they had them on was a 1999 BMW 540, they thought they would try them and they were really noisy. They have since been worn down and replaced. Can't remember what they are they are using now. Second car they had them on was 2001 Audi A8 V8. the PS came with the car. They were even worse on this car for some reason. Really loud even while puttering around town at low speeds.
Hopefully they are a little better on the Contour. Maybe its the weight that made them so noisy. Lets us know what they're like when you get them on in the spring.

225/40-YR18 KWD2's on mine now and let me tell you they feel great so far. After only a couple of weeks I am very happy...don't really seem noisy to me either. Hell my car is loud and it's a sports car not a luxury sedan with a silent exhaust note, mushy suspension and tires. Much better then the original 215/50-16's and still better then the 215/45-17's I just got rid of. I would have never guessed there would have been that much difference in handling and ride between the three...but there certainly is!

I didn't say it wasn't a good tire. I meant you haven't had better, thus your lack of complaints.

Goonz, I don't think anyone is saying the tire is not good - clearly by the test results it is a very good tire. What people are saying is that for $200 less you could have had a tire that tested better than those. Hey, you're happy with the purchase - that's what matters. (But try the KDW2s next time - I'm certain you'll like them at least as much. )

The PS2's are actually a pretty good step above the PS which Goonz SVT bought. Also, the 10th place BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KD are a BIG step over the KDW2, at least in dry. Hands down for dry performance, the PS will rock the KDW2 (and I plan to pick up another set of KDW2 soon).
