I would wish this task apon no one... removing the rear main wiring harness so I can rewire the damn thing because some stupid electrical engineer couldn't figure out he needed to have a different insulation on the cam and crank sensor wires. Anyhow heres the pics: I'll post more pictures tomorrow it's late

Heres the other pics as promised: This picture is of the back side of the engine over by the EGR valve. It's tight and the rear harness wraps around the EGR tube coming up from the exhaust manifold. This is the worse part trying to remove the harness from here. Basically have to jump through hoops until you have all the connectors unhooked and enough room to bring it out from here. After moving the power steering fluid reservoir you can unhook the ecu connector In order to pull the harness completely out you have to disconnect the alternator hook ups... but to do that you have to take the wheel well cover off. Then finally after blood and sweat you get this turd Good luck to any of you who attempt this, but keep in mind your saving about $700 bucks for a new harness.

I thought you were just having a problem with the fuel injector harness, the one that has the cam and crank wire take offs? Is Ford paying for the harnesses? When I did mine FI harness I opened up the plastic cover by the mega fuse. I only see one wire with the bad insulation. It's a black/brown stripe wire. It is the largest gauge wire in the bundle. Might be to the fan motors, not sure.

Ford would pay if my car had less then 100k on it... the cars frame has 123k on it so I'm SOL.
As far as bad wires go there are 4, but you end up replacing 6.
white/red-- Cam Sensor brown/red--
white/purple--Crank Sensor brown/white--
black/blue--Cam ground black/white-- Crank ground
The ground are a major pita. You have to strip the insulation off the wire and wrap the signal wires from the sensors with the bare copper wire. It's to prevent signal noise from surronding wires.
However yes the fan wires in most all 95-97 cars are shot too. Luckly for me my 98 SVT has different wiring for the fans as they are not cracking.

No. Ford would not have paid for it it it would have shown up sooner.
The owner notification program (recall) for the wiring only covered 95, 96, and part of 97. Your 98 was not involved. The factory had already started using wires with better insulation before yours was built.

Makes me wonder if they really did use better insulation when I hear about newer models still having this problem. I think some of the older harnesses were used on the early 98 models.

If you only knew... what do you think a company does with it's overstock parts? They use them! Nothing changed on the 98 model wiring harness. The part number is the same.

Everything is back together and the car is running like a champ.
If anyone ever runs into this same problem I can help you out with the details. It's really not that bad and I probably didn't have to take out the whole harness, but it sure made it a helluva lot easier with it out of the car.

And why is that? The liners don't interfer with anything electrical that I'm aware of.

.....wrong, Karl K (the electrical eng. who released the Contour wiring) did not make them, the issue was caused by the supplier AMERICAN Yazaki.....Building harnesses in a 'cleared new jungle' site in the far east, shipping them to Germany then on to USA tends to pick up a bit of moisture!....'can you spell 'outsourcing!!!!!!
