I read about changing out the bearings in the serpentine belt idler pulley and the tensioner pulley instead of shelling out for new assemblies from this link that all you need are two generic model 6203zz ball bearings and some simple tools. Now the pulleys in my Duratec are making this grinding-whining noise and I'm looking to change the bearings, but I've got no clue where to get them. Called crappy tire auto parts dept and they had no idea what a 6203 (or 203) bearing is. Can someone shed some light on this? Thanks!

Lots of places to choose from in Brampton. Here are a couple that I use.

Toronto Bearings & Belting Ltd
905-456-2226
2 Wilkinson Rd, ON

BDI Canada Inc
905-459-5202
52 Bramsteele Road,
Brampton, ON L6W 3M5

Here is a link to the Yellow Pages website listing for bearings in our area.

You may also want to try Princess Auto, they carry an assortment of bearings and are much cheaper than the rest.

Also I forgot to add that you need to check if your bearing is a 6203 metric or 6203 standard. I was replacing the 6205 bearings on my snoblower and found out that they were 6205 standard after I had ordered the metric ones. The metric sizes are more common these days but you never know.

Thanks a lot SVTCANUK!

Went to Princess Auto and picked up a few 6203 bearings at $1.69 ea. But was unable to change it because the stupid pulley is made of plastic and the whole thing was molded around the bearing so that the outer race of the bearing is almost completely burried. Any attempt of pressing out the bearing seems to be cracking or destroying the pulley. I'm glad I didn't go to the other place asking $10 per bearing.

Fortunately the ball retainer in the bearing is made of plastic too, and can be popped out, making the bearing servicable. So I did the best I could and gave it a good clean up in a kerosene bath, packed it with grease and put it back to service. Those of you who have a metal pulley may have better luck.

The noise, however, remains the same. And with the front-right wheel off and a splash shield removed I found the noise source -- the alternator. It sucks but it's my turn I guess, at 9 years/150,000km. Time to exercise myself up for that big challenge.

By the way, the bearing is metric, at least in my car.

No problem, I'm sorry you went through all the trouble for nothing.
