My friends g/f is buying a 99 Beetle 5 spd (which I am loaning $600 for). My friend says the car is super fast but I find that hard to believe. This is the same kid who said a 95 Grand Prix 3.1L could beat a 98 3.8L Anyway, can the Contour keep up with or beat this car? He said it could "smoke" my car. Comments?

I would hate knowing a car that comes with a vase can beat the Contour. Thats just sad.

I'm not much of a expert on Beetles but the GLS 1.8 turbo (155hp) will beat you if you have a atx unless they can't drive, but the n/a 2.0L 4 (115hp) you should be able to beat regardless, and for such a small car they weigh alot (~2700and up) but as I said I'm no expert so don't go racing for pinks based on what I said. I've just heard that the turbos have too much power for the car and are to a point dangerous if you don't know what your doing, from my uncle who isn't too easily impressed. what engine does it have and tranny do you have? and man that takes some good frindship to loan $600 to your frinds girlfriend for a car.

I believe the car has a 2.0L 4cyl. I seriously doubt it has a turbo. I have an ATX in my Contour. I hope your advice is true, I love to shut people's mouths

Some good friendship indeed. I am not one to lend money to ANYONE. I have known her for a good while and am pretty much best friends with the kid. She is getting a $3000 loan for school so aparently she'll pay me back in 2 weeks. Well I guess the better word is she better.

They definitely made a turbo beetle. For all these "who would win threads" all you need to really do is surf on over to edmunds.com and look up the cars you want info on. Sometimes it could be wrong or wont list the right info like a 98.5+ SE with a 4cyl when you want to see v6 stats, but just do a little more digging. Indeed the 99 beetle came in 150hp 1.8T trim, 115hp non turbo'd, and 90hp/155 ft-lb TDI versions. In 2002, as with all VW's and probably audi's around the same time sharing the 1.8T platform, hp was increased to 180(only on the beetle turbo S apparently) so watch out for those newer models.

Yes, the 1.8 Turbo will in fact smoke you. Don't hate because it's bubbly lookin, lol. The 1.8turbo is one of the more common motors in the 01+ models, as the 99 model year beetle was more poppular with the 2.0l 4 syl, abotu 120 hp. If the bettle is the 2.SLOW and an automatic, you'd have it by a car or so. If it is a 2.slow with the manual, it'd have you by a tire width or so. The 2.0 motors suck off the line, but they scream like beating your red headed step child above 4 grand.

We owna 99 VW beetle 2.slow atx and i dotn think there is anycar that couldnt beat it! The thing is so slow I think a metro might possibly be the only car slower....

Yeah, they just scream and sound liek they are making tons of power... falls on it's face after 4000 or so.

I own a 01 beetle with turbo and MTX and 99 SE with 2.5 and MTX. The beetle will edge ahead of the tour through gears 1, 2, and 3. Gears 4 and 5 the tour will gain on and pass the beetle in the top end.

So you guys think my 2.5L ATX Tour won't beat the 2.slow mtx Beetle?
