OK guys and gals here is the scoop on what's going on. The meet is in Des Moines, Iowa August 12-14.

Friday night August 12:
Meet and hang out anytime after 3 pm on Friday at my place:
6211 SE 4th St
Des Moines, IA 50315
Plan is to go shoot pool sometime around 8pm if there is enough interest at Big Dog Billiards- 2200 E Euclid Ave
Des Moines, IA 50317
Otherwise we will just hang out at our place, figure out something for dinner and drinks and have a good time.

Saturday August 13:
OK since things have changed we ARE NOT going to the drag races. The plan is to meet at my place whenever you get up in the morning and hang out, eat, drink, and be merry. We can arrange some side trips that day to the fair, mall, zoo, etc for whoever wants to go.

Sunday August 14:
Meet back at my place around 10-11AM and take a short cruise 45 min +/- to a picnic area with volleyball and playground for the kids. Grill out and hang out plus show off the cars. I'm working on getting reservations for a shelter. The shelter runs $50 so please chip in a few bucks if you attend. If everyone wants to provide their own drinks I can pick up the food if you can all chip some $ into the pot.

I figure we'll be done by 3 and everyone can head back at that time. I'll provide maps for the events scheduled.

Hotel Info
I haven't had much luck finding cheap hotel rooms due to the fair being in town, but here are a few:
Apple Tree Inn 515-961-0551 in Indianola about 15 minutes easy drive from my place $54-70 had 1 non-smoking and several smoking rooms left for that weekend.
Four Points Sheraton (airport) 515-287-6464 about 5 minutes from my place $70 & up (not sure of availability)
Motel 6 (airport) 515-287-6364 about 5 minutes from my place $40 +/- & up (not sure of availability)
Heartland Inn (airport) 515-256-0603 about 5 minutes from my place $70 & up (not sure of availability)
Bavarian Inn 515-265-5611 about 15 minutes from my place $70 & up with some availability.
American Inn and Suites 515-265-7511 about 15 minutes from my place $50 & up with some availability.

The airport area is closest to my place at 5-8 minutes easy drive if you want to try priceline or other search engines. The Bavarian and American are about 1/2 mile apart on the north side of town right off of Interstate 80 and several CEGers stayed at the American before Spring Zing and found it agreeable. With the fair in town I can't get any group rates or discounts or even a block of rooms so it's first come first serve. If you need/want a roomie please post in this thread. If you want to camp, I've got space in my yard, but I must warn you our shower facilities suck since the house is being remodeled.

Other than that, if you have any specific questions/comments/suggestions please post them here. Also, make one list of people attending (including family members) and copy and paste it to keep the list together.

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon.

I will be racing if we can leave if we wish to (meaning I don't want to commit to racing and have to be at the track until 'late').

I'm looking for one or more people to room with. So if you I can trust you with my unconsciousness, raise your hand.

Dave, you can show up and leave whatever time you like. Most likely I won't be heading back until later that evening (9 PM +/-). It's pretty simple to get to the track as it's intertstate except for about 10 miles and I'll have maps.

I was actually thinking if some of the Minnesota guys don't want waste 4+ hours drive time they could meet us at the track on Saturday and then come back to Des Moines that night. I do know there is a bunch of guys from several clubs in the twin cities doing a caravan that day to the track so I can set anyone that wants up with that info too.

Nope, it's an all ages thing. Even if we go to shoot pool on Friday night there is an under 21 section with a bunch of tables.

Yes, he could, and I'm hoping to get some spillover from him. I'm just going to hang around him the whole time and hope some girls get lost on there way to him and end up talking to me.

Hey Davo, you dragging Matt out with you? I think he's been in hiding way too long!

BTW, if all goes well, I'll be out at MAM this weekend. The road is now paved out to the track so no excuses

I'm trying to get him out. I've gotten 'Maybe' and 'Hopefully' every time I've asked him. So we'll see; his car isn't done, so he'd have to ride with me. I may have a super-duper Cougar coming with me, if his is repaired by then.

Give me some more details about this weekend, if you can. If anything, we can meet up for a meal or something.

Is that the guys with the custom nitrous kit too? I've seen that car on NECO, pretty sweet setup.

Mike has a lot of stuff done with his Cougar. His car is in the process of being fixed since some old lady hit him. He said if he doesn't blow the car to pieces at Cougarfest then he'll probably come up for the Des Moines meet.

OK guys and gals, I need you to tell me if you still want to do this meet. I know a lot of you are planning to come, but as of this morning I hit a pretty big crossroads in regards to my car.

Basically I was taking it in to get a brake diagnostic done before I hit the track this weekend and something happened with the engine though I'm not sure what. In any case it was serious enough that the engine shut off and wouldn't restart right away. I let it cool down and managed to get restarted and headed onto my appointment about a mile down the road. In my haste I forgot to latch my CF hood down and had it blow open, destroy itself and damage a fender, roof, door, and a few other choice pieces that will now all need body work.

In any case I doubt I'll have my car for the meet, but if you guys still want to come, I'll still host the event. If we want to scale down the travel time, we can go do something else on Saturday other than driving up to the track which is a 4 hour round trip. Just let me know.

Rick

Rick,

I love your car and it's one of the most impressive I've ever seen and ridden in, but I wasn't coming to the meet to see your car. I was coming to see people I haven't seen in a long time and meet some new ones. That's the way it is for me with CEG meets. I still want to have the meet, but if your desire to host has been diminished because of the recent events with your car, I and everyone else will understand. Good luck with everything, and please keep us updated.

Dave,

I was having the meet to see a lot of friends and stuff as well. The wind just got knocked out of my sails this morning for sure. I'm still up for having it if everyone else wants to come.

I obviously couldn't make it to the meet, but I'll be there in spirit. I am so sorry to hear about your car. It's a damn shame that this kinda stuff has to happen. Your hood was lookin really good painted body color--heck, the whole car is a gem. I know you'll be fixing it back. It's just a shame you have to do it in the first place. Good luck.

I think I can speak for OutlawdSVT, Tirminyl and myself and say we are still in. Its an escape from the norms of everyday life and a chance to hang out with friends.

If it is still on, we are still there.

OK everyone, I'm thinking that since we only had 2-3 people serious about drag racing (including me) on Saturday we should look into another option. Has anyone got something they'd like to do For most of the day? I'll throw out a few suggestions.

1) Iowa State Fair (probably the best overall option for fun things to do, but be prepared to walk a lot)
2) Living History Farms (think of an 1800's style farm where you get to interact with everyone)
3) Adventureland- probably expensive and sucky in comparison to Valley Fair or Worlds of Fun
4) Drive out to local lake and go swimming
5) Re-roof my house while the women sunbathe and keep us stocked with food and drink (just seeing if you're really reading this list or not )
6) Go to 1/8 mile dragstrip that's 1 hour away and watch/run if you want to.
7) Hang out at my place, do mods, BS, eat, drink, and be merry.
8) Go fishing at my parents farm (guaranteed to catch fish, but would require driving at least a couple of the cars on gravel to get everyone to the fishing spot)

Let me know what you want to do and I'll be happy to set it up.

Rick

1,6,7,8 all sound good, if we decide to go fishing I can bring my truck instead of the svt that day. No prob with gravel in that.

I just got off the phone with the American Inn, got 2 rooms for myself and OutlawdSVT. It was $60 for a double and $52 for a single.

I could probably fit in some number 7. I was going to have to totally back out since I'll be out of town the entire week previous and wouldn't want to ditch my wife for the entire day after I return. Now we can both come by for a short visit and still be together.

BTW, Bon and I are taking off early from work Friday and going to the fair late afternoon into evening. Give me a call and meet up with us!!! Cell 612-910-3069

I wouldn't mind coming in for at least some of this. do you have an address or fairly specific location for the picnic spot?

anyone think rooms might still be available if I call in like a week in advance?

OK folks, I am not going to be able to make it. I have finally solidified my plans and will be heading back to Colorado on the 8th. I am still undecided as to which interstate I will be traveling on (I-80 or I-70). If I end up taking I-80 (which is a little out of the way) I know who to look up, but Dave I would need your number again.

I know Im just a few days early, but I cant back it up any further. Sorry! There are a lot of new faces attending who I would love to meet. And if Outlawd still has his SVT he would probably get made at me for copying

Probably so. His car (I guess back in the day) and Y2K's were always my inspiration, minus the stock spoilers.

I may be a little biased, but I would recommend taking 80. It's just a good, smooth, safe trip. If you've got some time to stop in town, let me know.

I don't have an address on the pcinic spot yet, but if anyone needs info at the last minute you can call my cell at 515-975-4080.

Chris and James, sorry to hear you guys can't make it, but I'm sure we'll get together again.

So far the plan is just to hang out Saturday and possibly go off in a couple different groups depending on what people want to do.

I'm coming into this a little late. We are going to be down in the DM area that weekend, and would like to stop by on Saturday and meet some other contour fanatics. Just wondering where and at what time on sat.

My address is in the first post and I'm guessing anytime mid morning or after we should be hanging out.

Hey all, I regret to have to post this (as I hate to back out of things) but due to a very large purchase (see here) I won't be able to make the get together at Buckshot's house. I really want to go, so I hope you guys can understand and don't hate me.

On a posistive note, I have not yet cancelled our reservations for hotel rooms. I have 2 rooms at the American Inn, Rick referenced in the initial post.

I have spoken with the American Inn, and they are willing to transfer my reservation to anybody that I tell them to. It will require you to send me a PM me with your name, and I will let the American Inn know this info and PM you my reservation #. You can then call them with your credit card # to hold the reservation.

I have 2 non-smoking rooms reserved. 1 has a king bed and is $52 a night, the other has 2 queens and is $60 a night. The first to PM me gets the rooms, and the first gets the choice of which room they want. Again, this will be on a first come, frist serve basis.

If nobody has PM'ed me by Friday @ midnight I am going to cancel the rooms. Please be patient with my response as I work during the day and cannot check in here until probably after 8pm. I will try to PM the winners, and will post here so others will know if they need to look elsewhere.

Please remember that this is a busy weekend for Des Moines and hotel rooms are not easy to find. So I want to be fair to the hotel and other non-CEG'ers that may need a room.

I wish I could go, but at least maybe somebdoy that didn't have a room and wanted to go, the oppourtunity to go.

Ready, set, PM away!

Unfortunately I will not be able to attend. I have to work that whole weekend since I took the following weekend off 19 & 20 for a wedding that I have to attend. This is getting very frustrating that I haven't been able to goto a meet where there are more people than the local Omaha/Lincoln CEGer's.

OH WELL, maybe next time.

HOLD IT!!!

I just checked the schedule from work and saw that it is this weekend that I have to work fri, sat, & sun. So I will be able to attend but I will not be able to get there till sat night possibly sun morning most likely. I have to work my normal sked which is 0600-1800 fri & sat. So hopefully there will still be alot of people there on Sunday.

well scratch one more svt, mine is down for at least another week with tranny issues. Apparently the guy who was working on it wasn't wearing safety goggles and caught a piece of metal through the eyeball. He was in surgery all day tuesday and won't be back until next thursday at the earliest.

All right everyone, we're pretty much ready for whoever is coming this weekend. The heat sounds like it won't be too bad with highs in the mid-low 80's this weekend. They're calling for showers on and off so plan for the possibility of rain and that we might have to adjust our plans. If you've got a lawn chair of any sort, that might be a good idea to throw in as we've only got outside seating for everyone at the front deck and we'll probably mostly be hanging around in the back by the garage.

Cost- if everyone can plan to pitch in $8-10 +/- to cover the shelter and burgers/brats/etc on Sunday it would be much appreciated.

If you've got a softball glove and want to try to get a pickup game going Sunday, bring it and we'll see what we can get going. Other than that, my yard isn't quite done from all the concrete work, but we've got plenty of parking and place to roam so all should be good. We're looking forward to seeing everyone and have a safe trip. If you need directions from anywhere in/around town, call my cell at 515-975-4080.

Thanks,
Rick and Miranda

Glad you all had fun. I wish the weather would have been a little nicer yesterday, but other than that it was a nice time. Hopefully if we do it again next year we can keep a big event in the planning to go do.

Thanks,

I've still got them, give Mikey a little credit he was only second to last the second race.

I just thought of something...after every CEG meet the people who attend have something cool that they all change their screen names to, following a basic theme (bananas, ten minutes). Well, since we don't really have anything, I figure we could all change our names to the cars we were driving in that Nascar simulator. What do you all think?

...I'm just kidding, by the way.
