Who would have thought my 95 duratec was under warranty? Bought it for $2,000 with 60,000 two years ago and the harnesses were replaced this week with only 79,000 miles. Talk about a fried harness. All the wire harnesses had melted areas where all the wires became one. That could of caused the fans to burn out and the ABS module to short out. The dealership actually did a good job fighting for the customer on this one. Days were spent testing the old harnesses to justify the warranty/recall.

So for $2,000, Ford replaced $7,000 worth of stuff. Any other 95's still under warranty?

Thats what I said. Maybe less than 80,000 miles on the car but I would think the year of the car would have voided it but who knows.

All the engine wire harnesses and the harness in the dash were replaced. It was pretty bad. The fan wire harness was melted together and the dealer said the ABS harness had metled together in a couple of spots, which I have not seen yet.

WOW, this looks like a really bad problem. Anybody knows if the 98's have the same issue?

My '95 Contour GL Duratec at 68K miles is still within the wiring harness recall coverage time period: I bought it new, as an end-of-year leftover (the '96 models were already out), so my original warranty start date is still less than 10 years ago.

Why so few miles? It spent some time as my wife's daily driver - until the 3rd kid pushed us to get a minivan. Then it sat a lot while I used my Mustang as a daily driver.

This is also why I've delayed getting the harness checked by the dealer: Most of my Contour's miles have been in wintertime or rainy weather (the Mustang is simply more fun when it's sunny out), so the car hasn't spent much time with the high underhood temperatures that accelerate harness problems.

However, I've recently noticed a few wires with cracked insulation. Soon it will be time to put all of the documentation together - and take lots of pictures - to make sure the dealer doesn't try to fight me on this one. I'm pleased to hear someone else has had a good experience with dealer support on this issue, even on a car near the end of the wiring harness warranty program.

P.S. If you're not familiar with this issue, start here:

They have the same problem but no recall. It doesn't seem to be as bad but it's still a possible issue in an any older contour.

Phil, I did a cursory examinination (without removing any components) of mine a few weeks ago and did not noticed any cracked insulation. Would you let me know where the cracked ones for yours are so that I can check in more detail. I have this weird feeling that all of the wires in mine will short out right after the warranty period (in 10 months). I know that if I send it in for them to check, they will say that everything is fine and present me with a hefty diagnostic fee. Thanks
