I can't seem to find them available for purchase...
If not, any similar IB recommendations?

Adire has recently opened a new build house down in Chile or Argentina, the result of which is that they have stopped producing speakers for a time. Last I heard, they are getting ready to offer a whole new production of speakers that will have many new offerings and be quite a bit more expensive. I don't think that they will be selling speakers direct anymore either, from now on you will have to go through a dealer. An option for you might be: Elemental Designs 9Kv.2

I think the .30 qts might be a little low for IB?
I'm thinking:
Dayton 8 Quatro
QTS = .40
Xmax = 9.5mm
RMS = 150w
Price = $49.72/each

Onkyo 8" at www.apexjr.comor the other 8 listed there. Or, maybe the TB X8-740C or RE8 from www.respl.com

All good options so far, although my experience with the RE8's has been lukewarm, they seem to have very low power handling (I've seen two and heard of a few others that have blown running on RMS power)

I'm going to give the Tang Band 6.5" "subwoofer" a try from Parts Express. I'll order one when I get back from work today. I think it should be a pretty good choice. I'll be sure to post pics and results.
Specs look pretty good... Xmax 11.5mm Fs 35hz Qts .37
Qts could be better, but I think it'll be ok...

Really any speaker can be run free air, but a qts. above .5 is usually recommended. The MTX would be fine as would the Apex Jr. that Dave suggested.

Stazi, From the searching I've done, it seems most recommend QTS > .50 and Xmax 9-11 mm. I might have to snag that MTX at that price - good find.

IMO the Free-air setup sounds better than a sub in the trunk.... At least from what i've seen. We should have some good sounding setups... What exactly does the higher QTS buy you??

I'm considering doing away with my huge box w/ 2 12's in it and switching to a IB/ free air setup with two 10's on the rear shelf, i'm curious as to how comparable in SQ it would be.

You will have a hard time fittin gmore than one sub on the rear shelf. For one, you would have to cut another hole for the second speaker, since there is only one curently. Second, the seatbelt hump gets in the way.

Path914, No need to cut another hole. Just make a 5 sided box with the drivers firing at each other on opposite sides (like buztagrymes box) and you get the added benefit of making the motion of the driver parallel to the surface they are mounting to which results in lower distortion.

Dave, I completely agree, and Grymes box kicks major a** (I love illusion audio ), however in this thread I have been keeping with the notion that they are looking for free-air applications only. Once you start to introduce suspended boxes the options increase dramtically. I am currently building a horn sub application for my car, btw...

Do you have a picture of what kind of box you are talking about, I don't quite understand how this would look Thanks

Lol, you're right of course... I'm not sure what I was thinking. Ahhh, its ben one of those weeks...
SVTatGT, basically it is just a box suspended from the rear deck. It would be attached where the factory hole is and the speakers would be attached to its sides. If you search for Grymes, you will see that he made a box with four speakers.

I'm a little curious why? for a horn to work it's needs a massive amount of space. A car will prevent horn loading from occuring at low freq.
Don't get me wrong, it's always fun to play, but I'm not sure i understand the intent/

Well, mostly for fun, but also it will be considerably more efficient than my previous single 12". This allows me to run it off the back channels of the same amp powering my front speakers, eliminating the need for another seperate sub amp.
I am using Bill Fitzmaurice's Autotuba design, which only takes a 32"x14"x14" box (not significantly larger than my previous box).

I'm thinking I need a spacer to mount this to the rear deck so that the cone or surround doesn't hit the deck. Short of cutting something out of MDF, are there ready made spacers you can purchase?
Any ideas?

that's not what stazi is asking about.
as far as i know, there aren't any pre-made spacer rings for this application, stazi. but it should be relatively easy to make your own out of 3/4" mdf.

99MystiqueATX - Do you have any in-car pictures of your setup? I remember seeing your work in project pictures, and you were going to clean it up a little more. Any pictures? I've got an 8" J/L Audio sub that I'd like to use in that same spot.
Also, what size amp do people suggest I run for an 8" sub? Excuse my ignorance as I know ZERO about sound systems, but could I use the same amp in the future to run upgraded interior speakers?

Mark, the MTX is a 200WRMS sub and I have a Two channel MTX amp also rated at 200W which I have bridged right now to run my 10" MTX. So I'm thinking it will be enough for this application. Plus it's compact in size.

Is it easy enough to take that cover of the rear deck?
When I looked at it a long time ago, it looked like a PITA to remove.

When I looked at it a long time ago, it looked like a PITA to remove.
This would apply to your SVT, or any Contique with fold-down rear seats linky

In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.

It really isn't bad at all... You don't really need to remove the side pieces, it is easier if you remove the platic pieces but not necessary.
You just need to pull out the pins that are behind the seats and then if you flex it in the middle and pull it forward it will come loose.
As for an amp, You won't need as much power with an IB/Free Air setup. My amp has more than enough power to run this sub. If you plan to possibly use the amp to do something else, you may want to consider getting an amp that you can bridge into 1 channel like mine does.
No, Contour_Phoenix_When, I haven't had it bottom out yet, the Tang Band has a VERY stiff suspension, pretty much perfect for this application...

Just because you haven't heard of good brands is no reason to punish them by pointing them in the direction of Fosgate and Kicker.

Just because you have never heard of them does not mean they are not good.
In some cases, mass produced, off the shelf retail products are inferior to small, relatively uknown products.

Pete save your breath on the high-school know-it-all window licker. I hope to get the 8 in tonight. Steeda's coming over so we'll give it a whirl.

Pics!
What amp are you running with it?
I'm waiting to see how you like yours before I break the bank and get mine.

Got it in, but we need to put some sound deadener on the shelf as it rattle like a mofo. Good thing though is that ist puts out the exact same bass as the 10" in a box I had. So I'm happy. I'd post pics, but my fiancee has my camera and I don't have the right drivers for my scanner. I should have it completed on Thursday when Steeda brings over some e-dead. I'm running an MTX 202 amp that's bridged. Perfect amount of bass. Not ridiculous, but you can tell I have a sub. Even Steeda said it's decent for a free-air. He was surprised.
