If the grinding is not constant, it may not be anything to really worry about. Make sure that you haven't worn the pads out so that you are "metal to metal".
Some brake pads are just noisier than others, and the noise is often temperature related. Also, if the rotors have lightly rusted while stopped (rain, humidity, overnight dew, etc) the brakes may be pretty noisy until they wide the rust off with a couple of stops. Also confirm that the pad backing plates and caliper sliding pins are properly lubricated, that there is no unusual wear pattern on the pads, and that the rotors are in good shape (especially that they are not noticably "dished").
If it really bothers you and you can't find anything else wrong, try another brand of pads.

I don't know what I was thinking. I responded about disc brakes but you said the noise is from the rear drums. For the most part, the same principles still apply. Start by inspecting the drums and the brake shoes. Look for unusual wear patterns. Make sure the backing plates are lubed where the shoes contact. etc.
