Personally I don't like the original B&M knob it comes with. I like my extremely soft leather knob instead.
The B&M knob will give you frostbite in the winter. It gets sooo cold, its ridiculous.
And yes, as Goonz said, only the Steeda shifter requires a plate. Not B&M.
Steeda is a true short shifter while B&M just reduces shifter throwback. But that doesn't necessarily mean the Steeda is better than the B&M. Many prefer B&M over Steeda and vice versa.
