Go to ... Main site, look at brochures, and FAQ. There may be a better way but that has some good information, AND SEARCH!

20 more horsepower.

Larger throttle body (60 mm vs 54 mm).

Different air filter and intake (cone style using same air filter as V6 Mustang).

Intake manifold ported using the extrude hone method.

Primary intake ports on head extrude honed.

Cams providing slightly more valve overlap.

An engine oil cooler.

Radiator has thicker core for better cooling.

Quasi dual exhaust.

Manual trans only (5 speed).

Stronger clutch.

Lighter flywheel.

Larger front brakes.

As with all 98 manual trans V6 Contours, rear disc brakes.

Revised motor and trans mounts.

Unique front and rear bumper and rocker panel skirts as part of the SVT ground effects package.

In 98, a unique interior. Midnight blue with perferated leather seating surfaces. In 99 tan interior also became available.

White gauges.

Factory Premium Sound, either am-fm cd player or am-fm cassette player.

The early 98, same springs and struts as other V6 manual trans Contours, but with different front and rear sway bars.

In late 98, re-valved front struts for SVT only that were a bit stiffer but mainly kept car from lifting as much on acceleration or diving as much on braking.

205/55ZR16 tires. Early 98 wheels different from late 98 and newer. Early style often called "Cosworth" style and late 98 and newer more like the Cobra wheel for SVT family identification. Both wheels look very good.

Available in Black, Silver, or a slightly maroon toned Red. A deep green was added in 99.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head.

New, an SVT sold for about $5,000 more than a nearly equilivant SE and non of the incentives (rebates or lower interest) were available for the SVT.

19lb injectors
leather shift boot
hand picked crankshaft
early svt's had bigger front brake calipers, used on the ford rs,etc. then they switched to the smaller calipers on the standard tour/stique/cougar, but with bigger mounting bracket to use the 278mm front rotor
later models after 99 got the daul extrude treatment to the upper intake manifold, and larger ports on the lower intake manifold
the svt pcm also got a more aggressive treatment...

Stronger than the ATX, if that's what you're asking.

Overall it is very strong. Strong enough to handle large horsepower increases from engine modifications.

It is not without it's weaknesses though. The weakest point is the final drive (differential). It is only a two pinion design. The common cure for this is to install either a Torsen or Quaffe LSD unit that replaces the diff and are nearly bullit proof. There are several upgrades available to make the trans shift smoother from better fluid to shift forks with bearings on the shafts to improved synchro's (a slightly loose 3rd gear synchro is so common that it is nearly normal).

If any of the trans problems are bad enough that better fluid doesn't make it livable, there is plenty of help available.

With over 200,000 miles on my car, I have not yet needed to do anything with the trans or clutch except change the trans fluid and the clutch (brake) fluid ocassionally.

Excellent info, Jim.

Also, Duckie.. Post the vin, mileage, and cost of the car, as well as any defects, or trouble spots you notice. This can further help you to know what the car is worth, etc.

Check for the bad synchros in the tranny (either 2-1 downshifting or 2-3 upshifting are most common)
