Should be changed every 30k, not 70k




Nobody said he/or the prior owner didn't change it at 40k. Why head the head shaking?

If you've been driving for a while with the clogged screen, chances are the pump is already shot. Give the screen cleaning a shot, but don't get your hopes up.

Friend's Contour had the fuel pump die at 55K. Had the same symptoms. There was no time to try to save it.

And by the way, I'm glad to hear somebody else gets good mileage. I have gotten 30 MPG in the city, and average in the high 20s with the automatic. Highway is usually 31. That mileage drop is definitely worth looking at.
