Common terminology around here (at least used to be common, all sorts of phrases are thrown around now) were:

"pre-98"
"98+"

You'll note my car was built in late '97 as well, though it's a 98.5 (October was around the transition point for non-SVTs, IIRC) ... the VIN decoder on the main FAQs page will determine for you whether you have a 98 or a 98.5.

I think I'm finally going to upload a few pics onto my profile detailing certain 98/98.5 characteristics of my car, haha

My SVT was built in Oct or Nov 1997. Is a 1998 (as in E0).

example I have a 95 mystique, it was built 9/94

Well, it depends. I bought my car in Jan 96. It was built in Sep 95. I assumed that in Jun 96, I could have found a 96MY car built in Feb 96.

This is one of top 10 FAQ....

For the billionth time, the build date is not the model year. The 10th digit in the VIN is the model year.
V= 1997, W = 1998 (includes 98.5 cars), X = 1999. Look up the others in FAQ.

Cars are new in the fall, so quite a few are built in the "old" year. A "new" car can sit for months before it is sold, so it could have been built in the previous year.

And officially, according to Auto Industry records, Oct 1st of any year is "New Model Years Day". And yeah, some cars are early, some are late, but Oct 1 is official for record keeping.

If your build date says 97 then I'm almost positive you have a 98 and not a 98.5 as it states in your sig.

(Someone correct me if I am wrong)

my 98.5 was built in november of 97. i know its a 98/5 because it has the sport package (unavailable until 98.5) and the VIN decoder states its a 98.5. it is possible, and i think thats how i got lucky and missed all the 98.5 decontenting

'98.5 Black Ford Contour SE Sport 5-speed. All the SE Sport features with all the 98features that were supposed to be decontented for 98.5 '04 Silver Toyota RAV4 L Auto. Fully loaded.

If the window sticker says "second generation airbags" it is a 98.5. Mine was built in November 1997 and says that. It also came with the clock in the dash which was decontented in most 98.5 moldels.
