James, definitely a fun new name!

I hope you guys can make it this year. I signed up yesterday. I'd like to get a caravan together again. I'm hoping to get some of the KC guys to come along too this year.

This sucks, I have been planning on doing this ever since I missed the 04 one, then a friend tells me that my class graduates the 21st. Hmmmm, decisions decisions

THIS REALLY SUCKS I even already got the dates off from work and had $100 bucks in my paypal account for me and a friend and I could even dyno my car. I guess I can work a few more days now.

Hey Guys....sorry for the delay...I haven't been on here for awhile. I'm registering for SZ and the dyno runs this weekend.

Rick, I'm definately in for the SVT caravan if we can get some people together. Just let me know where we're meeting and what time!! I'll talk to you this weekend when I pick up my ride.....assuming you're going to be around. I'll hit you up tomorrow (Wednesday) to make plans for this weekend.

Now, who else from the area is going to get their butts to SZ!!! I know there are a bunch MPSL/St.Paul guys!!!! Let me know if you're going and we'll take off together and hook up with Rick and everyone else somewhere along the way!!

Hope to see some more posts here in the upcoming weeks!!!!

Later.

Mike

I'll be going, but I don't think we'll be seeing the MN people at least until Chicago, unless you guys are going out of your way coming down on 35. There's also someone coming from Washington who will probably be going through Minnesota, so may sure you get in touch with him. This should be an interesting little adventure...

What do your guy's budgets look like for your trip? Like some people around here, I am on a tight budget but would LOVE to go. I can get the dates off at a snap of a finger, it is just the money part that is the set back. Is there anybody that would allow me to bunk with them at the hotel? Or is there any other ideas that might help me out?

Don't worry about the hotel, there will be people to bunk with. We had 4 people in our hotel room last year, not sure what it cost. I'd be most worried about gas costs if I were you.

Usually someone will post up a hotel roomie thread in the SZ forum so people can get that arranged. I'll PM Beyondloaded about it right now.

Well, it looks like I have a 90% chance of going. So how will this caravan thing work out? I was thinking about everybody meeting up somewhere around the I-35,I-80 intersection.

I'm pretty sure details will be worked out later. If you guys are coming down 35, that's great. I'm going to consider getting a hotel room Wednesday night in Des Moines, because the first day of SZ last year I left around 3:30 in the morning, and we didn't get to Detroit until 7 or 8 that night. I want to avoid doing that again if I can.

ive been debating whether or not i am going down I70 or I80. swazo was debating whether or not he was coming, and if he does, im assuming he would come down I70, in which case I would meet him. if not, i may take a slightly longer route to I80 and meet up with all of you. i have around a 17 hour drive total, so breaking it up would be nice. i also want to caravan.

Sounds like a few of us Minnesotans are around and about...

Mike and I are two cars (zero Contours... but oh well) then the other two I'm seeing here... that's a pretty good nucleus for a caravan right there.

We could start from my place in Apple Valley or nearby (easy access to cty 46 and MN52). I have found it is quicker to drive 52 to Rochester and I-90 than to swing up north and take I-94.

No offense to Iowans... but I would rather meet up with them on the route than trek down there Wednesday night.

Hey Zoom Zoom.....who's Mike? Me? I'm confused.

Anyways, I'm Mike too and I'm in Eagan. If we have enough people we can just do a mini caravan from the TC area and then meet up with Davo/Rick(Buckshot77) and the rest of the guys somewhere along the way. It doesn't much matter to me whether we go down to IA or meet the guys from IA & NE in route.

How many guys are actually registered and paid from the TC area? If there is 5 or more lets do our own and then communicate with Rick (and company) on where we want to meet up with them. I know it's only Feb. but this is my first SZ and I want to do the whole kit n kaboodle....so if I have to drive to IA to hook up with 5-10 guys then so be it.

Let me know your thoughts.

Later. Mike

Which way would you TC guys be taking? I have been looking at the fastest routes from the twin cities area, rochester area (where I live), and Des Moines area and if we all don't want to meet in Minnesota or Iowa, it looks like the best place would be around the intersection of I-39 and I-80 in Illinois.

Lets get some more ideas here. I'm with slingersvt, this will be my first SZ and I too want to do everything I can to make it the best

Yeah, taking 39 to 80 would be the best option, because 90/94 through Chicago will take you forever, regardless of the time of day. That would be a decent place to meet.

MN Boyz...if we have a few more people, I agree that we should take 52 to 90 and then meet up with the rest where 39 and 80 intersect.....definately a good idea to try and bypass Chicago as much as possible.

There is a parking lot that is about 30 seconds from the HWY 63/I-90 intersection that would be an ideal place for us MN guys to meet up. Plus there are 3 gas stations less than a mile away.

Sorry... different Mike. He goes by zenboy and is another Contour alum (he drives an STi).

We're both registered, paid, and have a room reservation.

Slinger and all, in past years we've met up with the guys from Chi-town and TC area just past Chicago and then caravaned from there to SZ. With it being in Indiana this year and us staying on I-80 for so long I figure we can just meet at an exit just past Gary, IN and caravan from there. This does save you MN guys a fair amount of time.

Loco, you up for picking an exit on 80 for us to all meet at? I'll be in need of fuel with my gas hog so a gas station nearby would be preferable for me.

Rick

Well after traveling part of 80 last weekend.....I think the Oasis right after 294 (on 80/94)would be the best. Anybody coming from WI and Chicago would easily be able to get there...and being right off the highway is a big plus.

The way most of us have done it in the past is charge the bed sleepers a bit more than those sleeping on the roll-aways. Get four people in a room and you're living pretty cheap...

according to mapquest, traveling up to I-80 is faster than I-70. its also an 18 hour drive (again, according to mapquest, so probably 15 or 16 hours). here are my options:

1. leave at 2 or 3 in the morning to get there by 6 at night
2. drive halfway and stay at one of YOUR houses. . . .

could anyone put me up for a night that lives close (45 min or less) to I-80? someone who preferably has a 10 hour or less drive to SZ.

im a road warrior, but i can only push myself so hard. i would also like to arrive at SZ in the 6ish pm area to meet everyone. if thats not cool, no doz and red bull will be my best friend. its just not that safe. . . .

i am flexible, and can arrive whenever you would like. i am also willing to leave anytime in the morning the next day. i would plan on arriving the day before SZ starts.

hey, its just one more to caravan!

lastly, im not 100% sure what my plans are, because i will be working up until the day i leave. im just trying to open up some options.

thanks!

You can do it....I have driven 24 hours straight before.....on my trip to the Dragon I started driving at 12 midnight and drove until we got to Tennessee at 6 pm.

I was talking a different trip.....the time I drove 24 hours is when I drove from Monterry, Mexico to Chicago.

well, regardless, i think i may stop in des moines. its about half way, and then i can caravan with all of you. that is, unless buckshot pulls his trailer slower than 80. . . .

if someone could let me know what a good exit would be to stop at to accomplish this, let me know.

Sorry man, I try not pulling at over 75 just for safety's sake of the other drivers should this thing start to whip on me. As far as getting off anywhere, we usually meet up in Altoona for the caravan and there are some hotels right there.

Thanks,
Rick

My attendance at Spring Zing is uncertain and even bordering on unlikely, and I may be in the process of moving at that time, or I would invite you to stay here. But if I am going, I'd catch you on your way there and we can go half on that hotel in Des Moines. I'm going to try to avoid leaving at 3:30 am again.

That would suck if you can't make it Dave but I know firsthand how things can get in the way.

What, you didn't like driving across Iowa in the dark? LOL That drive sucks.

Well that drive sucks in bright daylight also. But I left home around 3:30am and we arrived in Detroit at 7, maybe closer to 8pm. Obviously we weren't driving the whole time but regardless, I didn't recover from that.

yeah i hear you about fast trailering buckshot. coming from florida ive done my share of that (23 foot fishing boat, with trailer around 5000lbs. not always fun). 70-75 is about the max, safely. ive seen plenty of trailers swerving all over the place behind the tow vehicle, and somehow the driver is still cruising along like nothings wrong . i hate stupid people like that.

i would stick with ya anyway, cause going as a group is more fun.

davo, hope you can make it. i would definitely be down for sharing a hotel 1/2 way if you are able to go.

as for driving in the dark, i just ordered some HIDs so im not to worried about it being "dark"

Ya, I tried telling the Ci-town boys I didn't want to run over 75 on the way to Detroit last year. That lasted about 5 minutes. I know I hit 85 a couple of times trying to keep up. Of course I think we paid for it later by getting nailed by Detroit traffic moving 10 mph!

It's more that when I roadtrip, I like to be able to deep relax when I drive... and I can't relax like that over 90 mph.

So can someone post a summary on how this caravan thing is going to work out or is it still in the making? I live in the Rochester area and am willing to drive to Des Moines or meet up with people on I-90. I remember some talk about hwy 52 and i-90. There is a sidestreet like .5 mile away where some people might be able to meet. This is pretty much the only part that is going to get me to go to SZ

And to show you that I want to go, I have $75 in my paypal account already.

Anybody? this money will burn a hole in my online pocket if I don't finalize my SZ plans

BTW, I'm still looking for a room. Cheap is good, free is preferred, all I need is a floor.

It depends on when you're leaving and who you want to caravan with really. There will be a group leaving Des Moines Thursday morning early or I'm assuming James and Mike will be leaving sometime Thursday from the Cities so you could run with them. The Des Moines group will be hooking up with another group just east of Chicago and then travelling as a pack to SZ. I'm not sure if James is planning on meeting up with everyone there or just seeing us at SZ. James, care to hop in here?

Our plan is to leave early Thursday morning and to take 52 to Rochester, then 90 over. If we can put the logistics together, I am hoping to meet up with the Caravans (the Iowa and points west and the Chicago guys and maybe some from points south) near Chicago (we need to get that firmed up) and continue on to Ft. Wayne.

We will likely have other MN people with us, unless they are heading down to Iowa in advance.

We need to get the meetup time firmed up, so we can plan departure accordingly.

Thats great, I pass by that almost everyday. Before you get to 90, there is a road about .5 mile before that would make an ideal location to meet up. How many will there be in the MN caravan?

We're still feeling that out. I know of two for sure, and then I don't know the other plans (will they go down to Des Moines or join us?)

We do need to get this all firmed up though... it's not that far away. I'm just worrying about my trip to Indianapolis for the RX-7 before I worry about this one 4 weeks later.

Ok, so there is 5 cars (including myself). Not bad but is there any other minnesotans coming?

Also, were we still going to meet the Iowans around the I-39 and I-80 junction. That seems to be pretty good, at Peru, Illinois

"According to my calculations" ....It looks like it will take ~5.5 hours to get to that intersection from the I-90, US 52 intersection. Then another 4-5 hours to get to Fort Wayne. If that helps any, BTW I used Microsoft Streets and Trips.

If you're rolling from Minnesota rather than coming through Iowa, then we will be meeting up with everyone at the Chicago hook up.

Question: Are any of you MN's interested in meeting up with Rick, Davo, KingpinSVT down in Des Moines??

My own preference would be to drive the extra couple hours and hook up with them.....I've got a cousin in Des Moines so some of us could stay at their place on Wednesday night or something......otherwise if the majority rules and you'd prefer to meet them at that designated location in Illinois then I'll just do that. Let me know.

Who's all going from MN????

Mike

Well, it's totally up to each individual... while it would be cool to have our varied autos together from Minnesota, the last thing I want to do on the eve of a long drive is make a long drive. I would rather spend Wednesday evening doing the last finishing touches, packing, clearing out correspondence, and getting a good night's sleep. Trust me, you won't be getting any too much at Spring Zing, so it's best to be well rested.

Anyone that wants to head down to Iowa and meet up with those folks is more than welcome to. Anyone who would rather leave from Minnesota is more than welcome to come with us. We want to have you come with us to Fort Wayne whichever way you prefer.

Thst fits right in with the 290-294 loop I was planning too.

What time is the meetup... allowing for the fact some of us have a 7 hour drive to get there.

I will not be going. Nebraska will be lonely anyways, as there are only about 60 miles between here and Iowa. Stop in town for lunch or dinner or something though.

Alex,

I think the Des Moines group is me, Kingpin and Buckshot (trailer).

I'm going to IA the night before (95% sure)....do you (want me to meet me along the way and you follow me the rest of the way to Des Moines?? At least we'd have three Tours and Rick's trailer.....

later, slingersvt

it appears Doug will be going with us as well....(XKontour98)....hopefully......you can talk to him about sharing a hotel if you want.....unless you've already worked out something with Kingpin.....

so right now...we tenatively have 3 Tours going to Iowa the night before to hook up with Buckshot/Kingpin in Des Moines:

1. slingersvt (and buddy) (driving 98 C-SVT)
2. 98_HO_Contour (what are you driving?)
3. XKontour98 (what are you driving?)

Anybody else want to change their mind and go down to Des Moines the night before?????

That's not really the decision I made. I'm going to Chicago for Memorial Day weekend, so two trips in two consecutive weeks was not possible. And yes, international soccer is more important than Spring Zing.

If I wasn't starting a new job I would think about it, but I am so I won't.

I will be staying at a hotel (to be decided) off of some I80 exit.

Buckshot, what exit are we meeting at (or what exit are you on)?

Lets see how cheap we can get it if us 3 guys share a room. I would have to leave Rochester around 4:30 AM to get to Des Moines by 7-8.

By the way, I drive a 98 Tour SE, just like in my sig

I'm not actually on that end of town. We're meeting up right off the interstate so it's about a 20 minute drive for me to get there. As far as hotels, look up the Bavarian Inn on NE 14th St in Des Moines and that's probably your best bet for a hotel that is cheap and about 10 minutes from the meeting place plus about 1/2 mile north of I80

Both, did you see my post about meeting at Bosselman's in Altoona? It's a big truck stop in Altoona, IA about 5-10 minutes east on I80 from where you'll be staying.

Did the four of us:
slingersvt
KingpinSVT
98_HO_Contour
XKontour98
just want to split the cost of one room. Personally, I don't need a lot of creature comforts, just a place to get a good nights sleep before we take off Thursday morning. I'll be bringing my sleeping bag anyway for the Fort Wayne hotel so I won't have a problem with the floor.

So Doug....what time do you want to leave for Des Moines?? Alex, what time works best for meeting Doug and I on our way down?? Where would the best place be to meet us?? Let's get this firmed up then since you guys are doing the hotel with Chris. Later, slingersvt.

P.S. - on the bright side of having to drive a few extra hours...at least we'll be rolling with 4 Tours on the way to Chi-Town from Des Moines with Rick and his trailer.

Well then maybe KingpinSVT and I will have to hit it up for a bit because I don't feel like leaving for Des Moines at the same time I'd be thinking about hitting the sack for the next day.

I hope your not serious about that race, I'd open up a 55 gallon barrel of whoop ass on you. But anyway, yes you can have the bed. Now how about we find out how much this room will cost. Who would want to do that? I'm busy tomorrow but I can do it Thursday if anybody wants me to.

So Kingpin, are you still looking at being in Des Moines around 3-4? Unless Slinger and XKontour can get down here sooner than 7 PM it looks like I'll be tagging around with you if that is alright. Maybe we can cruse the city for a while or something. Let me know.

I did a short bit of searching today and it looks like the Bavarian Inn isn't really that bad of place. Here is a link I found if anybody is interested. It looks like a room will be around 50 bucks so I can put in ~10 if Kingpin and XKontour are taking both beds. I'll call them tomorrow and make sure they have an opening for May 18-19 and get an exact cost so we can get all of that arranged. Maybe I can just have you two paypal me your part of the money and I'll just pay by credit card when I get there. Just an idea

Well, I just got off the phone with the Bavarian Inn and they said the rate for two beds is $67 a night after tax (60 + 12%). A credit card has to be on file in order to hold it and right now they have a "few" rooms left. For the money part I was thinking I would put in $15 and you other two can paypal me $26 a piece and I can call to reserve the night. What do you guys think?

Guys, that's too much for that place. If all you need is a bed try the American Inn. It's about a half mile closer to the interstate on east 14th.

Anerican Inn $44.00 515-265-7511 5020 NE 14th St, Des Moines, IA 50313

That's the best I found, but I didn't ask if they have a AAA or business rate if you guys want to try that method.

2 beds and I told them 2 people as it really doesn't matter if you've got more than that.

Okay I just called and reserved a room with two beds.

The rate however is $50 plus a $6 tax.

So thats $56 total and we can cancel upto 24hrs before hand so if we decide no to go with it we should be ok.

How would you guys like to split it up? or would you like to trya nd find a better deal? Im fine with this?

I figure $23 for each bed and $10 for the floor? let me know what you think guys.

You should tell them you had a quote of $44 per night.

You should try doing that first and I'm fine with the $10 floor thing if that doesn't work. Thanks

I'm cool with that, but what about me getting there several hours before you guys? Or what time were you, Kingpin, getting there? You never did answer my past questions for ya.

Well im thinking maybe one of you guys will want to reserve the room instead as I wont be down there until like 10-11pm! I can call and cancel and one of you two could reserve the room and try and get the $44 rate. I just dont want you guys waiting for me to get there is all...

That is the exact time I want to be there. You interested in meeting me at the hotel at a certain time, check in and get the key, then have something to eat? And which one of us wants to reserve the hotel? Doug, I assume you needed a credit card to reserve the room right?

Sure, I'll reserve it for Wednesday night tomorrow. Is there anybody out there that I can share a room with on Thursday night? The guys that I'm staying with won't get there till Friday afternoon.

OK, just called and asked what exit they are off of (the American Inn), and its exit 136 on I-80.

On the same topic, did we get a room reserved there?

Lastly, re-reading all of this thread, it looks like our meeting spot in the morning will be:

Bosselman's in Altoona, IA?

Is this what you are talking about Buckshot?

If so, it looks like we have about a 10 min drive to the meeting spot from our hotel (heading east. good, no backtracking!).

Please correct me if i am mistaken. . . .

Second Edit: What time Thrusday morning for Altoona???

Edit: HO, what time do you plan on getting there? I can be there as early as 3pm, or later if you prefer. Just let me know. If you are getting there at 4ish im going to meet Davo for lunch. . . .

What about everyone else? Well, mainly just Xcontour. You getting there later?

Sorry, I have been extremely busy these last few days. I'll be reserving the room tomorrow morning with my card. Kingpin, did you have a time that you WANTED me there? Its a 3 hour drive to the hotel from my place and I thought about being there around 4:00 or so, that way there is time to get situated for the night and grab something to eat.

I reserved the hotel room for Wednesday night. I'll be checking in around 4:00 or so.

American Inn & Suites
5020 NE 14th St
Des Moines, IA 50313-2016
(515) 265-7511
A map if you need

I was able to get the $44 rate plus tax brings it up to $50. How does you two pay $20 a piece and I pay $10 since the two of you get the beds?
