Hi there, I just want to make sure how to clear the engine codes on the OBD1 vehicle. It's a 95 w/ the v6. I was reading here before that you can pull 2 fuses out for 5 minutes. Numbers 4 and 11 is that correct? Thank you very much.

Hi and welcome to CEG!

I'm not sure about the fuse numbers; I find it easier to simply disconnect the battery and find something else to do for awhile.

BTW, I've heard of leaving it disconnected for as long as 15 minutes and as short as 30 seconds; not sure how long it really takes for OBD-I - more commonly known as EEC-IV on Ford-speak, and may depend on the specifics of a particular vehicle.

Note that a power-off reset like this will also kill the contents of the KAM (keep-alive memory), which handles settings used for idle, etc. So the engine may not run quite right until the settings are re-learned.

If all you're trying to do is clear the error codes in the long-term memory, you can do this quickly without disconnecting the battery or clearing KAM.

Here's one description (go to the bottom of the page; and note that I've never seen the code 19 symptom they describe):

I must admit I've never had to clear codes on my Contour, but I've done it numerous times on my Mustang, which uses an earlier version of EEC-IV. So your mileage may vary, etc.

Hi Phil, and thank you for the help. I'm new w/ the Contour, and so far I've been reading a lot on this forum before I have become a member, It's a great ford community here as well as the Probetalk.com wich I've been a member for a long time. Thanks again.

Yeah, just take off the positive battery cable for about 15 to 20 minutes and that should do it.

Welcome to the boards.

It would probably be beneficial if you pulled the codes first, that way you'd know why the CEL was on.

Code reading on the 95 can be done with a paperclip.

Code clearing can be done at the same time by pulling the paper clip jumper out of the circuit while codes are being output. This will save all your KAM settings.

Thanks Steve, I drove the car yesterday 15 miles and the Cel never came back, my roomate is a mechanic and he said that I have to drive at least 40 miles more, then if the Cel doesn't come back it should be fixed. The way you have mentioned w/ the paper clip, where can I find more information about it. Thank you.
