I wouldn't. no offense to any non-svt owners. i only bought mine BECAUSE it was an SVT. there is no way, personally, I would have bought an SE knowing there are SVTs out there. and if there were no SVTs to be had i would have gone on to a different car.

i have two possible scenarios i typically encounter with my car.
1. i have to explain what it is to the laymen and that the svt is the hi-po version
2. other REAL car guys see my car and are like "whoa, ive heard of those." (not that theyre overly impressed but there is some respect for them)

my buddy has a Typhoon and people, usually youngsters, say to him "those were fast back in the 90s" thinking they cant smoke today's cars. he has taught a few NA porsches a lesson or two.

My cousin had a typhoon! Man he'd tell me those exact same stories. Too bad it was stolen.
That first gear sucked but once it hit second... DAMN!

I agree wholeheartedly that the SVT is a better car, but...

No SVT in 96, but the SE with MTX was the best performance/practicality value out there. The only other 4 door sedan that competed on price was the Chrysler Cirrus/Dodge Stratus, but it was 90's Chrysler quality, and only had drums in the rear. The Contour came out on top for somebody who cared about how the car drove.

I considered the Maxima, a car I had long admired, but by then they had already gotten fat and mushy, and were about $3k more, IIRC. Honda had already left the performance market. Anyway, I wanted a V-6, 4 doors, and handling as nimble as my deceased CRX. I got it.

I considered a SHO, but they were bigger, and about 4 or 5k more. I couldn't swing it.

If there'd been an SVT in 96, it would have been tough. I would have wanted it, but I don't know if I could afford it.

Anyway, I don't see any reason, today, to trade in my early SE on a later SVT. Yes, the cars got more power, but my car is lighter, and I'm tweaking the suspension, anyway, so the handling capability will be as good or better than a stock SVT. I sure would love 30 extra ponies, but otherwise, I like the content on my 96.

And, after posting this, I had a memory. I really looked into the SHO, but I figured they were too much money. My wife asked, "Well, what about a regular Taurus?" I chuckled. No way I wanted anything to do with a regular Taurus. So, I guess I know exactly where you're coming from.

Unless you wanted an auto tranny in your SHO, that would be significant enough a difference not to want a Taurus in my opinion ...

woohoooo.......i got back to my apartment around noon and someguy pulled into the lot right after me and before i could get out he had already come over and started asking me about the tour........and i didn't even have to explain about anything. he already knew all about it. he just wanted to know what i thought about it because there is a silver 98 or 99 for sale locally ($7000 asking) that he wants to buy. what a nice change of pace.

She didn't tell me so either she is too dumb to know what kind of car she drove or was to embarassed to say. Ok thats it for story time haha, anyway just igonre haters they have no clue what the contour can do.

I think I'm just going to keep a copy of the 99 SE spec sheet handy to show people. You know, the one that says my ATX has a (thoretical) top speed of 178.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I've been on this site for a few years now....I don't post that often...as you can see...

I just like to read all this stuff.....and this is probably one of the most entertaining threads I've read.....I've encountered many of these same situations as well....from the escort to the grocery getter to the grandma car to the rental car......but I always seem to convince people after they see what the "SVT Contour" is all about!!! Later!!
