My gas guage has lost it's mind. I put $10 in at the pump and it goes to full. I'm driving around with it showing half a tank full, then three minutes later I'm under the E.
I have ran out of gas twice now because of this damn faulty gauge. I'm on a tight budget, I can't afford to fill it full every time and use my trip to calc. milage. I heard that you can only purchase a new guage if you buy a new pump, is that true? I'm trying to tell the car I'd like to fix this first. Thanks guys

Ha I got the same problem on my 98.5 SVT....except my gauge doesn't work period. It just stays on Full but the "low level gas light" always stays on. Pisses me off quite a bit but i bought the car that way b/c it was in incredable shape. Right now I'm using the trip as a gas gauge. It sucks but untill someone on here has a fix or solution for it I'm afraid I can't do anything. Don't really want to take it to FORD and pay hundreds and them still not know whats up w/ it. My guess is the owner b4 me had the fuel pump go bad and replaced it w/ the wrong one (there is 2 different fuel pumps in the SVT's) Each one I belive reads at different ohms. Only thing I can think it could be.

Sounds like floats are sticking.

the floats sticking may cause the needle to stick on F but it wouldn't cause the low fuel light to stay on. The low fuel light stays all the time even on a full tank.

Sorry, that reply was to burntu.

Not sure about your problem chill. It definitely sounds like it's reading totally wrong. Has the guage moved at all? Did you run out of gas and have it die at all ... if so was it still exactly the same ?

I came across this while searching the net ...
Quote:

My fuel gauge indicates from empty (when full) to full (with about 1/4 tank) and the low fuel light does not come on. I have tried reversing the wires at the sending unit, but then the gauge does not respond at all and the low fuel light stays on all the time. Any ideas or suggestions?

nope never ran out of gas, since i knew about the prob when I bought it. Since i bought it I just fill it up and hit the trip and use that as a gas gauge. IIRC a few times before I start it the needle will be sitting somwhere between F and E but then after I start it the needle moves all the way to F...the low fuel light staying on, always on. lol its kind of funny but damn agrevating too. Id love to fix this stubborn prob.

Sounds like you need to replace the sender unit.

I 'think' this is the part to replace F8RZ-9350-AA. Should be a guage unit for 12-9-97 to 5-3-99. About $150ish too.

Hopefully someone else can give more insight, 'cause I'm not 100% sure.

welp, the guy i bought it off of said his mechanic looked at the sending unit and it wasnt that. Not sure what it could be. When i bought the car my mechanic looked at it and couldnt figure it out either. He even said that the module behind the dash that recieves info for the gauge was registering readings even w/ no power?!?. This is why I'm thinkin the previous owner replaced a bad fuel filter w/ the wrong one, not knowning there are two diferent fuel filters in the SVT. Just an thought that would cause the fuel readings to register wrong.

When I replaced my fuel pump my gauge worked fine. Afterward it would stay on full until @ 270 miles later and it comes down to 1/4 tank. When I replaced the cover to my pump housing we had some difficulty getting it back on. I think that where the floats swivels, there is some sort of zeroing device in there and it's off now. That may also be your problem.
