first off, hello to everyone.
I just bought a 95 Contour GL with the 2.0 and a 5 speed.
The car has 93K mi on it and I am wondering what is the milage to swap the timing belt.

I have seen 3 different answers. 80K,120K,and Life of the car

so would someone with a factory maintenance book please tell me the "official" scoop?

Thanks in advance!

Haynes Manual says the '96 series should be changed every 60k.

I'm going to take off my timing belt cover tomorrow and check the belt. I suggest you do the same.

it is fairly commen that most people say to change the belt at 60k, I remember rading that someone contacted Ford and they were saying to change it around 80k. I beleive most Ford stuff says the belt is a liftime item, figuring by 100k the owner would trade the car so that is lifetime

now that these cars are hitting there second if not third or more owner this doesn't hold anymore

I changed mine at 104k and the belt was fine, it was the pullies that were the issue

so it is your call, a peice of mind call if you will, it could be fine for thousands of more miles or something could go and you are stuck for hours on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere because you know that is when it will go, the moment of least convience

After 8 years and 4 months, with 162,000 original owner miles, still have original timing belt. At about 148,000, while changing valve-cover gasket, it still looked brand new and someone on this site a pic of one at about 120,000 and it looked ready to split. Don't know why that is. Also, around that time, the "experts" were saying 130,000 is Ford recomendation.
Guess it gets expensive if it goes before routine maint.

I found the maintenance book for my car....it has nothing in it about changing the belt.

so, I call the friendly Ford dealer and they told me 105K

so, I will pull the cover off, and inspect the belt. if it looks good, I will let it ride till about 100K

does that seem sound to everyone?

I think a lot of it has to do with weather conditions. Driving around in cold weather is sure to stress parts going from extreme colds to piping hot. Then you add in the Salt on the roads and you can easily have what it takes for an early belt death. Then some people also practically live in a desert with zero humidity and that dries out rubber parts fast.

I'm at 96K and the belt looks good. I can't say a pully might not ever die and take out the belt, but that is why I have AAA.

that is fine for the belt but like I have said before my tensioner was about to split in half, and all the pullies were worn down, the new ones were raised at the outside edge, leaving a low point in the middle, all mine were flat

Ford Scheduled Maintenance Service Guide
from Ford of Canada
Revised 05/00 IW7J-19T200-AA
States:
"FOCUS, ZX2, CONTOUR, MYSTIQUE, COUGAR,(2.0L), ESCORT,
TRACER(1.9l & 2.0l),RANGERR(2.3 & 2.5l),ESCAPE(2.0l)
*Replace cam shaft belt every 200,000 km "

Which is 120,000 miles.

Thats the "Official" word , and every car is different. I did mine at 110,000 miles - belt was OK BUT all the pulleys and the adjuster where in need of replacement. So think of doing the belt between 100k & 120k and factor in when you will have the money to do it.
