Are they the same? Or do they have minor differences? I see everyone says to use the Escape engine now.

The only reason for using the escape motor is for those planning to do a full 3L engine. The escape motor all ready has the correct timing cover and center engine mount so you don't have to pull a head or do creative grinding to make the mount fit in. That's the only difference. So if you plan to do a hybrid anyways, it's not worth the premium that the Escape motors are bringing over the taurus motors in the salvage yards.

Not entirely correct though.
The Escape also has the upgraded oil pan (depending on year which revision you get), upgraded oil pickup (a MUST for ANY 01+ engines), upgraded oil baffle, better front cover, better power steering pump & pulley, usable exhaust manifolds (if you want/need them) I feel I am forgetting one or two more things.
So's it's worth maybe $150 more just based on the usable parts you don't have to buy separately. Then add in the new style cover as a bonus since you are not required to use it.
Also I'd never recommend a hybrid and retain the oiling issues though! Definitely not worth it when you see the full oval port engine equaling P&P'd hybrid engines and you dont have to pay ($$$) to have 3L valves installed either.

Not everyone. From Terry....
OK, not to rain on any project but I urge anyone thinking of a 3.0 to note this:
*Escape 3.0 used engines are a risk...the Escape has a large number of warranty engine claims* The same issues on the Escape 3.0 COULD affect othe 3.0's * Using a 'new' block from Ford is also a risk....'service' parts have LOWER QC inspection standards than 'production' parts*If you must go 3.0 get an old block and 're-man' the engine...it MAY reduce the risks....

Okay, but if I am going to go through the engine anyway, and pull heads, and I have extra 2.5 timing cover, etc...than I could go with the Taurus engine right? I do want the oval port...and the 01+ Taurus have the oval port as well...right?

Safest bet.
Some 00 were oval but not all. Also some didn't have revised pistons, windage tray, new studs, et cetera.
If you go with a Taurus engine you have to use either the 2.5L pickup (up through windage tray and stud upgrade) or the upgraded YL8Z pickup (upgraded engine)
I'd mention oil pan but if you are doing work like this you are probably buying the upgraded pan anyway. Even though IIRC someone said the Taurus pan "fits" the Taurus pan should not be used.
