Sorry to beat a dead horse, but I have a cupholder there. Under my armrest and behind my emergency brake is a rectangular storage compartment. Then behind that is a round deep cupholder for the rear seat.
If anybody has a pic of the console without the cupholder I'd be sort of interested in seeing it...

This is precisely what I'm talking about.
All Pre-98 Contours had a cover. All SVTs had a cover.
All 98+ GL, LX, SE (and SE Sport??) had an exposed compartment with rear cupholder. I use the cupholder to hold my two-way radios. 
Pictures of the famous cupholder in my currently very cluttered car:
Holds the two-ways perfectly 
Can anybody take some detailed pics of their pre-98 or their SVT of this compartment?

yeah, give me ten minutes to get back to my car, wish I had seen this a few mintues ago as I was just in my car

yes SE Sports have the same center console, the arm rest is a pain in the ass, that is why I put a pre98 console in
