I posted in the brakes forum, but I don't think that gets much traffic. Any ideas how to remove "burned on" brake dust from wheels? A friend of mine drove her Sebring JXi with a brake problem which created some serious heat. The result is some pretty bad brake dust cooked onto the wheel. Meguiars wheel cleaner and a plastic brush only made minor headway on it. I need something STRONG that won't damage the wheel finish.

maybe a brillo pad will work, that way you can really get at it, then follow with some wax to seal up the surface

did you try Simple Green?
how about that Orange Blast?
I don't think I've ever had the baked on problem, but either of these have always helped me clean up filthy brake dust and tar residue (from newly paved roads).

You've got to be careful when doing this - but take some Simple Green or Eagle One All in One Wheel Cleaner and a green scrubbing pad.
Spray the wheel and pad with the SG or EO and start scrubbing. Most will come off fairly easily - however there will be areas that you will need to really scrub hard. Don't scrub in the same place for too long too hard.... If that doesn't work, I've tried some rubbing compound on the rims and that lifted some hard to get spots.
Then, definately, seal that bastid up with some wax....

One more thing - DO NOT DO THIS IN THE SUN!!!!!
Sprays such as SG and EO tend to dry up VERY quickly and do some damage if they do dry up completely.

Thanks. I had thought of trying Simple Green. I think I'll skip the brillo pad - sounds a bit harsh for an alloy wheel.

I'd also try to hit it with a claybar. It'll be less harsh than a brillo pad but may not take the embedded particles out.

Yeah, I figured it would be a good start though to remove the surface particles. The embedded particles would need to be aggressively removed. I've only had to battle this once on some girl's white Grand Am with white wheels! I couldn't get the corners clean, but she was happy with what I did. After that I made a point to clean my wheels as much as possible to prevent it.

SOS pads !! they worked great for me on brake dust that was so old and caked-on that it looked like rust. worth a shot, and if they don't work, you can scour your sink or something
