Well, unless you are trying to blow up your motor free revving your motor above 4g's isn't a good idea. But if you insist on being able to you will need a chip to eliminate the rev limiter.
Um, I would think it does this to protect your torque convertor. Engine should have a separate rev limit to protect itself. It's called fuel cut. Let me know if it is different for Contours.

Automatics have 2 revlimiters. One while the car is not in motion, so you don't be stupid and decided to rev to redline and blow the motor....That one usually stops you at 4 grand.
Then theres the one in motion that prevents you from going pass redline....(in this case a fuel cut off) usually automatics do not have to worries about this one (from my experience driving my frineds cougar) unless you shift to a lower gear like 1 or 2....drive won't let you hit this.
MTX contours and cougars only have a fuel cut of....you can free rev all you want in N.
