Hey guys, thought you'd all like to know how the tour did on an open track event. We ran at Mid America Motorloex which is a 2.25 mile road course by Omaha, Nebraska.

In the rain I had a pretty good advantage on Saturday and ran the second quickest lap of anyone there on some skinny little 215/50/17 Firehawk SZ50EP's. An 03 cobra on v700's with tread had me by about .375 seconds on an overall of 2:29.xxx lap time. We both outrun everyone including some instructors by about 3 seconds to the next closest set of times.

Once it dried out I put on my race tires and ended up besting the same car by .2xx seconds in the dry. Best lap all day was turned by an S2000. He ran 1:47 in the dry and I ran a 1:52 as my best. In the dry I still ran better than about 80-90% of the cars for overall lap times and only got 2 laps in on my race tires before going off track and having to be pushed out of the mud so I was done for the day.

Sunday we didn't run with timers but I know I picked up some time as well as everyone else. The cobra would barely pull me in the straights but I could run him down a little in the corners. Unfortunately on my second run I had a small electrical fire in the trunk so I called it a day rather than patch it back together and risk it happening again. Other than that the car performed flawlessly except for some very high oil temps. Anyone ever seen a 270 oil temp in a contour!

Overall with similar experienced drivers I think the car would edge out the cobra on this particular course which is pretty high speed. The front straight I was topping out about 122 at the braking zone. Fastest I heard of this weekend was only 125 from a full race prep car.

The TCE brakes with race compound pads were simply awesome. First run in the dry I had to stiffen up my front struts as I was actually lifting the rear and causing it to hop.

Thoughts/comments?

Thanks,
Rick

Awesome!

Glad there weren't any tire barriers on the side of the course....or was there? :-)

Mostly open runoff area. Very few tire barriers and you'd pretty much have to brake mechanically or fall asleep at the wheel to hit them.

The funniest thing about this weekend was Rick calling me on his way back on Sunday... He started off by saying something about "having a great weekend and not having any breakdowns", but then going on to say his trunk caught on fire from a turn off switch short. For anyone else, that would have been devastating, but for Rick it was a great weekend. I guess it qualifies since none of the "fun" parts got broken. LOL!

270!!! Holy crap, you're running the upgraded pan, right?
I thought it had a larger surface area to allow better cooling. . .
That's pretty high, did you cool down in between laps??

Awesome times, congrats on whopping everyone out there. . .do you think you could've placed the same without the engine mods, ie was it a driver's course, or were there a lot of straight aways that you could make up time on. . .

Actually I'm still running a stock pan. I don't think it's really got any increased surface area though. I actually think part of my oil temps were due to running a 0-40 oil which happens to hold more heat than a 30 weight oil. So I'm going to change that out as well.

As far as the course goes, it's a combination course as it has a nice long straight (1/2-3/4 mile) then a few turns and a couple high speed sweepers plus a few smaller straights. There's nothing quite like coming out of a long left hander running 90+ and grabbing fourth gear while your straining hard against the 4-point harness. It's fricking awesome.

MAM is a driver's course with long main straight and several places to pass. Judging by Rick's lap times being on par with an '03 Cobra, and having plenty of powering straights (i.e.Rick's 122 MPH top speed on the main straight), I would guess any normal Contour would have been a lap down on a 10 lap run! It's not a small autocross type of course.

Man that is so awsome to hear that you ran with the big bad cobra. I can only imagine your topend power. I bet you really like the Contour with all that handling and power. I car were built for his kind of racing and we do well in it too. Nice Job man

Have any of you guys run events at Heartland Park? Seems like every time I'm out there I see a Contour (usually silver, one maroon) but I never get a chance to introduce myself/ask who it is. I have a calypso green '92 mustang coupe I run on track days.

I haven't been out there yet but hopefully sometime soon. Drop me a PM to let me know when they've got an event planned. I probably won't get a chance to make another one this year unless it's October sometime.

Come to the tail of the dragon October 8-10. I know it's not as fun as a road course, but it's still fun.

It sounds like a lot of fun, but being that it's on an open road, it's not quite as appealing to me as it used to be. I remember JVT and another that got speeding tickets down there a couple years back.

Yeah but weren't most of them on their bikes? From what I understand, you really can't exceed the speed limits in most areas. A lot of us have radar detectors and we'll have 2 way radios, so I think getting a ticket is unlikely. I just want you to come out here so I can ride in another supercharged contour.

There's an Audi club event at HPT Oct 22-24. There's also LightningFest (open to all makes/models) Sep 26th but I don't know if I can make that.

I will have to see if I can make the October one. I'm also hoping before the end of the year to make KCIR and possibly an auto-x down there, but with the home projects I've promised the wife and a vacation in September it may have to wait until next year.

No way TOTD compares to open track and quite frankly it scares me that people think it does. TOTD, or any similar public road, is a great place for a spirited drive but one that remains well within the limitations of the car and driver. If you're thinking of TOTD as an open assault on the asphalt gods then be sure you're alone when you try

How much track time did you get? Cost? Organizing body?

Total track time if I ran every session I could was about 3 hours cost of $240 organized by the mustang club of central iowa. I'm their secretary as we've also got a 65 convertible stang in our stable. This was our 3rd year hosting an event and it was a good turnout and we are planning to do it again next year. Let me know if you want a registration packet sent to you.

Definitely no way to compare a spirited road drive with a full out track assualt.

I didn't see anybody thinking that TOTD compares to an open track event.

Sorry, I was thinking of a post in another thread.

That's the problem with the internet, I've never met you, never driven around you, and can't tell whether your joking or serious. Since it's my pink body at stake should someone wipe out on the Dragon, I tend to err on the side of caution and perhaps read into things more than I should. However, last year a biker passed me then promptly dumped it not 30' in front the car. Had I been as reckless as him and on some bonzai run I would've killed him since he was laying in my lane.
[/thread hijack ]

That's a great value for track time. I'd love a registration packet for next year and will PM you.

We tried to keep the cost down as low as possible and still make enough back that we could hold another event. Heck even if you showed up at the gate and paid full bore for both days it was only $350 for the whole weekend and Saturday included transponder times.

BMR, where are you from?

That would be cool. I'm hoping if the car continues to prove out I might eventually do One Lap with it. I know with all the subbies and such in the mid price sedan category it won't fair nearly as well, but it would still be a lot of fun.

Strictly out of curiosity, what is the entry fee for One Lap?

And if you do run One Lap, I'll definitely go out to Hallet (assuming they stop there like they always do) to see you run!

Hey if you need a co-driver i'll be glad to whoop arse....

To be conpletely honest I can't help but think one-lap is filled with quite a few guys with more money than experience. I drove a 944 in NASA's porsche cup series and was very disappointed, I nearly hit a diaso spec racer he was going so slow in the corners, I also was ran off the track by a guy who didn't know how to watch his mirrors.

I went to Heartland Park to watch the One Lap guys when they were here, and ran a couple lapping sessions wiht a couple of them a few weeks prior, and I assure you they know what they're doing behind the wheel. Most of them anyway. Don't confuse it with that Mischief 3000/cannonball [censored] full of euro-trash and a FEW real drivers...the One Lappers are the real deal for the most part.

Yes One Lappers are pretty much open track junkies that mostly have built specific cars for this. Some of the cars have a hired/professional as well with the car owner being the rich guy along for the ride.

Wish ya could have made it out to CougarFest. We had an absolute blast the entire time, and our track day was a great success. We had IRP's 1/4 mile and their parking lot setup as AutoX. You basically got in as many runs as you wanted on either of the two, and Trevor even AutoX'd his Explorer! (The video of the Explorer run is here: http://www.fastcougar.com/images/explorer/explorerautocross.wmv )

The track ran slow because of humidity and NHRA Outlaws running the day before, but it was still well worth it. You'll have to go next year, for sure, so we can run the two SC'd 3L's side by side. :P

I couldn't afford to ... the next day I had two helpers (Jagular [TJ] & AtomicInternet [Brad]) help me load up 10,304 oz. of fluid into the back ... that's 10 x 32 16oz. bottles of water, 9 x 24 12oz. cans of Mt. Dew, 6 x 24 12oz. cans of Coke, 3 x 24 12oz. cans of Diet Coke & 5 22lb. of ice. Not to mention, I hauled DanG's track wheels/tires to and from Fest, along with 2 3-Ton jack stands, a 2-Ton floor jack, and 2 tool boxes loaded to the hilt. Oh yeah, it also hauled all the AutoCross cones (150 small, 4 tall). I think that I definded both Sport & Utility that weekend.

Next year, this truck will be trailoring my Cougar if it's done by then. Yes, I am selling the Contour and looking into getting a 1999 Cougar again.

Let me know when you do - I'm going to do that in the Cobra, along with the Silver State Classic Challenge.

Rick, maybe you could get the contour into the economy class. You'd then only have Dubler and Dale's srt4 (if he does it again) to contend with. Though the srt4 only had stage 2 and suspension IIRC, so next year it could be even stronger.

If they let an SRT4 into the econo class then the SVT shouldn't have a problem, however I wouldn't be too surprised that even if I got into it to start, they might reclassify.

I'm sure the SRT got in there on some technical loop. The main thing they're supposed to base it on is the price of the car originally. Thought the base contour and neon are definite econo cars, the SRT and SVT were not.

Funny!

Also, I looked back at the One Lap results from this year and it would appear all WRX and SRT-4 Neons were put into mid priced sedan rather than econo car. My guess is this is where I'd land too. I don't know that I'd have a chance with equal drivers on an STi but I bet I could give a good run to a WRX or SRT-4.
