Any of you forced induction boys tried this? I know that in a 1/4 test of one of the lingenfelter 'vettes, car and driver got the best times from a secon gear launch. The car was making so much power it was destroying the tires at the line. somethin like 3 sec 60 foot times. I know you turbo people are having traction issues, anyone tried this?

I think it would bog the motor a bit too much to see any benefit. Also you better make sure you have a clutch that is up to it. I dont think the factory one would hold a 2nd gear launch. I guess it could be worth a try.

You would definitely smoke the stock clutch in a heart beat.

Now if some turbo'd 3L with a Torsen, 4.06 FD, and a adept clutch foot tried slipping 2nd gear from 5000-6000rpm and not be pissed off at me for shattering the stock cast flywheel would give it a try we may all see what would then happen.

The short story.

Except for maybe a turbo'd car, no one is going to have enough torque to get the car moving fast enough before the engine bogs down badly.
Even then it would be one hell of a clutch slip.

The thought crossed my mind....
Especially since 1st gear is basically WORTHLess in my car under any throttle positions beyond 1/2 throttle!

Oh, HI Chris???
Are you going to answer my PM, or leave me hangin now?

I put in the secondary water tank and all I noticed is that it takes up too much space normally. Ice is the only reason that the secondary trunk mounted tank is justified, and its not normally practical.

Tom

I tried a couple of 2nd gear launches and it looks like its feasible with a high enough slip to get the speed up. I tried letting out the car with a 3000 rpm fast slip and it broke traction, caught and then bogged a little.
I tried a 4000 rpm slip and it got rolling pretty smooth and no wheelspin, but still dropped out of boost a little.
Looks like you are right with a 5000 rpm slip range will probably get it rolling enough so it doesn't bog too low. The natural torque of the 3L helps it get rolling, but if it bogs down below 3K it will be out of boost and take-off slow.
It can't be any worse then spinning all the way through 1st and halfway through second gear though!

I tried a couple of second gear launches in mine ( n/a svt, couple mods here and there). This is definetely something for the turbo an sc boys only wich is why I posted the thought in this forum. I got the best results launching in the 4500 to 4750 range. Granted it bogged like a mo-fo my first couple of attempts but what do you expect. I was feathering the clutch a little, not just dumping it and it held up alright. I finally got it to really slip after about an hour of toying with it. Completely my fault though, I dumped and was way too agressive when I went to wot. Sounded cool though With a little practice, you guys with upgraded clutches might be able to make this work.
