The right side motor mount on my 96 SE automatic needs replacing. Has anyone done this and what is involved? I can get to all the bolts but there does not appear to be any clearance to pull the mount out and install a new one. This is the mount on the right side of the motor but is acually between the back bank of cylinders and the firewall. Currently the tranny end is resting on the frame.

I believe you will need to get a slab of wood and and a short scissor type jack to lift up the engine. Be carful how/where you place the the wood to ensure even distribution of the weight as you lift.

Could you clarify the above?
After unbolting, right mount is lowered down to remove. Neg battery cable to be removed for safety due to proximity of generator. [ref: '97 service manual]

Not sure what you want clarified. This mount is the one that supports the tranny on a frame member running crosswise just below the fire wall. It is next to the cat. converter for cylinders 4-6. It sits on top of the frame rail (unlike the 5-speed support which is underneath this crossmember. The problem is that it's packed so tight in there that once unbolted there is no clearance to actually remove it. Apparently Ford calls it the right motor mount but being a transverse motor most folks would call it the rear motor mount. This carries most of the engine/tranny weight and has allowed the end of the tranny to sag down and sit on the chassis next to the driver side front wheel.

Cylinders 4-6? You mean 1-3 don't you?
Haven't removed myself but have stared at it from underneath many times. Tools have habit of falling down there if working in EGR area. Having trouble quickly interpreting Ford manual diagrams and write-up with reality. They do say to remove bracket from transaxle "if required". What the h**l is that supposed to mean?
As per my prior post it seem you have to move it towards pass side and then down to get it out (therefore gen warning).
Don't know if I'm helping or not.
p.s. MTX as you state is under sub-frame. BTW diag calls it front subframe which must be an error, since that should be the sub-frame at the rad. Unless they use that term to differentiate from suspension sub-frame at rear of car.

Yea, cylinders 1-3, brainfade on my part and to think I just changed plug wires! Thanks, I'll look into the alternator removal. I'm deveoping a healthy respect for my daugher's '95 Civic, so easy to work on it's scary.l

Leave alternator removal to another day (BTW it's another difficult job), you just move mount past the exhaust manifold and alternator on its way out.
