This is the email I recieved about a job I had applied for.
Mr. Kanakry,
Southwest Research Institute is seeking an Senior Avionics Technician to support our Ann Arbor branch.
We have received your resume and are interested in learning more about you. Before we conduct a telephone interview, we ask that you submit a cover letter by email detailing the qualifications you have that make you well suited for this position, as well as your career interests and motivations. If you have any personal hobbies that you think are relevant, then please discuss those as well. Please be as specific as possible and also include a .doc or .pdf version of your resume.
Question is do I go into extreme detail as in like dates i have been doing certain things or what? I have never had to write anything like this.
Trying to get some opinions

Coming Summer 2007: Steeda On a Plane. In all seriousness, include tons of details and even include sidework ou've done for free (CEGer's brakes come to mind). Even though it is not something that flies you are still showing your ability to work on more than just one thing. Maybe a a vehicle will break down when you need it for the job? I could think of more, but I'm out of Energon.

Writing a cover letter is kind of like writing a really good car "for sale" ad. You want to sound as shiny and capable as possible, but don't overdo it so that the reader calls BS. You really want them to know why you'll be an asset to their company; that's not a question of telling them what you think they want to hear, but instead what you think they NEED to hear. You can talk about personal interests mainly if they relate to your work, but don't get too deep. And don't really bother with dates and places if that information is already in your resume. Keep the tone positive and interested, and whatever you do, don't...

That's what I was thinking.
But yeah, since they asked, provide them with as much detail as you can, but keep it a page long. That's what I've always been told.
They want to get a feel of who you are without interviewing you first.

It was on a Military website and you could only link your Resume.
