That's why you get a Dual-Action buffer. It's axis rotates in a circle while it spins, so it basically jiggles 
Virtually impossible to burn the paint, great for a novice.
That's why the PC 7424 is so popular among non-pro's

having read this thread and having seen Petes car yesterday I do have to say, for the condition that the paint is in the pc was the way to go. the hand polishing didn't come close to the feel and look of the pc part of the trunk lid
btw I saw this car before Pete tried anything on it, the paint was tough
so for beat up paint the pc is the way to go ...

yadda yadda, it works fine for me. how do you know what condition my paint is in or how inferior my results are anyway?
You results will be inferior due to the amount of time being saved. With the way are hands are shaped, we as humans can't put a even coat of polish or wax like a machine can.
Now I hate America? That is a new one to me.

Best bet is to call a few local shops and inquire about having your car polished.
When you find a good shop at the price you want, prep it before you take it in - wash and clay.
I would charge ~$25-30 to polish a prepped car - that's me though. Not sure what a shop in your area would charge.

I can definitley understand the differences and benefits of using the machine...and that's just not the way I do it. I don't feel comfortable using the buffer. I know it takes alot longer, and believe me my back doesn't much like it either - but that's the way I do it. I did not mean to get out of line and i apoligise if i did, maybe one day I'll find someone with experience to help me out, but until then i'll do it by hand.
BTW Can you still get those www.CONTOUR.ORG vinyl stickers?? After 4 years, mine finally bit the big one and got discolored and gnarly. They really looked great too...i'd love to have another set.
