I think the large rebates are a bigger deception than the 0%. Rather than just lowering the price, they make you pay a $10 or so more sales tax on the higher list price. Then they bank on the percent which will not turn in the forms or do something to invalidate the rebate.
It is up to the individual to use the credit responsibly.

Circuit City has a good sale on a lotta things right now (especially video games), might want to check them out.

I know all about centrino... Ive been reading up more and more on this laptop, and im starting to like the idea more... The only thing I dont like about it is the processor, but after using it for a short while, daily computing is pretty quick on it, and memory is dirt cheap for that model.. a 512 MB stick of DDR2 is only $62 through crucial... Plus I can get an extended battery for $100 IF I need it, and if I really want to get crazy there is an external universal battery I can carry around thats supposed to give another 3 or 4 hours. No matter what laptop I buy, im getting all of the extra battery accessories... Plus this particular model just went on sale for $499 O_O!

If you look at some of the other deals, the price doesn't seem that great, IMO, but it is yours (and your mothers) money.

I never said rebates were great, some retailers are starting to do away with them because of all the complaints (thank god).
While we could take this conversation on a tangent about these things, I would prefer to bring the conversation back to the topic at hand, if that is agreeable.

Those "2 hour" batteries are where the maker cut some corners. It is probably a 4 cell battery. Check EBay for a 6 or 8 cell battery. The lappy I got my wife came with a 4 cell, and I upgraded it right away...

that was the plan, I tried my damndest to find out how many cells where in the stock battery, nowhere said, the gateway website didnt say, they didnt say at best buy, nothing. I looked on bestbuy.com and they sold a battery for $100 and its a 6 cell, they claim up to 3.5 hours of battery life, but it looks exactly the same as the one that comes with the laptop... It makes me want to buy one of those external power packs to keep in my laptop bag, I mean I probably would get one anyways, but for a just in case kind of thing.

By the time you spend $70 for more memory and $100 for more batteries, you could have just bought a better laptop overall for $700. Just wait. THere will be plenty of better deals, even locally, in the next month before you have to go to school.
BTW, Centrino is a combination os using a Pentium M processer and Intel's wireless ethernet card. There are Celeron M and Pentium M centrinos. Centrino isn't that important, but Intel Mobile processor is. The wireless card doesn't matter as much for power consumption.
FWIW, my 2.75 year old Dell 600M has a Pentium M 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM, 30GB HDD, 64MB dedicated video memory, CDRW/DVD-ROM, 1400x1050 LCD screen, and a 6-cell battery that lasted at least 2 hours with heavy wireless internet use during my classes I took up to April 2006. If I disable the wireless adapter and lowered the brightness I could get another hour, but my classes were only 2 hours long. I always recharged when I got home at night. So, batteries only lasting a year must apply to some crappy laptops. Oh, I paid $742 for it new and it has better specs than this Gateway you listed (except HDD size). I'd expect better performance for less money some time a couple years later, even if mine was a hot deal at the time.

little update, I ended up getting the laptop in the add. Primarily because it went on sale again. I picked up that sucker for $450  not bad. Gateway MX3225
