It was running fine for a couple of months, some *minor* oil leakage from the right-end axle. Nothing serious, oil levels were checked about once a week.

Last Thursday, I was driving happily downtown, starting okay at lights, stops, whatever...

Friday I went to one of my friend's cottage in Stanstead, everything was okay on the highway for a while (cruising at around 130-140 KMPH on cruise control). Then my tranny started gear hunting, I thought at first my cruise was on the blitz, so disengaged cruise control. I had to stop to get some milk and bread, took the exit, and then my transmission stopped behaving normally. It started slipping, knocked once, some more slipping, then I stopped.

Car would heavily slip in Drive, but Reverse would not engage at all. Checked my levels, they seemed OK, a little on the low side. Tried to push the car while in NEUTRAL, would go about a foot backwards then stop, as if the tranny was stuck in gear. Had the car towed.

Next morning, it would randomly engage in D, but not in reverse at all. (nor allow the car to be pushed backwards in neutral). Went to get some oil, it started engaging gears with about 2 liters of oil. Even if oil levels were too high, it would work fine. My first guess, a busted tranny.

Then it started doing it again. (when warm). So today, had the tranny flushed and refilled to proper levels, but it still slips, and the car lacks power (runs like an old 84 escort)

Mechanic says the tranny is dying.

Any ideas? I don't want to change it, as it's not worth the money (already spent way too much on that car)

I'm about to try some transmission reconditionner (Bardhal or others)

My guess is I'll have to start looking for another car

He is correct. Don't spend another penny on additives, etc.

Time for a rebuild.
Be sure to put all the new updated parts into it.
Install a aux cooler.

It's a 95 with a Zetec.

A transmission rebuild would cost more than the car is worth...

So?

maybe some people don't have the money to get a new car. If my transmission/motor went out in my car i would not hesitate to put a new one in it even if it did cost more than the car's worth.

This car is only worth, with an operational transmission, around $1000 USD assuming average mileage and fair condition.

Yhe only thing stupider than putting a $2000 transmission into a car that's only worth $1000 afterwards would be to buy stock on Vonage.

Hey, people do stupid things all the time. I'm not going to recommend them on purpose.

2000 for a tranny!?

maybe from a dealership, i'd go to the junkyard and find one with under 70,000 miles for $300 dollars.
