so i'm having a problem with my bike, and i think the problem is the alternator - voltage is really low across the battery, even when the engine is running. can an alternator be repaired, or do I have to replace the whole thing?
now officially a troll, i guess. used to have a black 96 SE, until it broke down one too many times.
now I'm hunting for a motorycle.

Not sure about repair or replacement but did you check to see if you have a seperate voltage reg. That could have gone bad.

The problem with America is stupidity.
I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment
for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety
labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

alternator's can be rebuilt (usually what you get from the parts store is a reman). however unless you know whats wrong with it it may be difficult and its easier just to buy a new/remanufactured one.

Usually when the voltag reg goes it just creates way too much voltage (from experience).

What kind of bike? Most bikes have generators and not alternators.

it's a 73 honda cb350g. I'm sure about it being an alternator, not a generator: I got the clymer repair manual (which is pretty much worthless, but the only thing available)
besides, i thought generators got phased out in the 60s or so? maybe on dirt bikes they are still around though, I don't know.
