That is odd. Almost nobody I know changes computers that often. They run them as long as they can get them to limp by.

Agreed. My laptop is already 2 years old, and I'm planning to run it until the warranty expires and it craps out. The oldest desktop PC my parents have at home is more than 5 years old, and is currently undergoing its 3rd upgrade. We kept its predecessor for about 5 years, until upgrades were no longer practical.

6 months to 1 year is my limit for an aging PC although I let the kids go longer or they start bitching about poor performance.

Currently have running:

Athlon 64 3000+ PC
Sempron 64 2800+ Laptop
Athlon 2600+
Sempron 64 2600+ **FOR SALE** LOADED PC (UNUSED)**

Its so easy to just swap Mainboards and CPU's that I look forward to new technology.

Windows Vista will be delayed until next year so there are no O'S upgrades to do until then.

Gary

Hi, long time no post. Been crazy busy the last couple of days(unpacking from school, worked 13 hours, mothers day, 02 sensor died, reorganizing my room to fit in my stuff from school into my closet for storage)

BUT! I've been searching looking at options and right now here is where I stand:

I killed the driver side strut on the way back from school. I had probably over 500 pounds in the rear and the car never came back up.

So it looks like my first purchase is going to have to be suspension.

So between the 02 sensor and now needing struts (and most likely springs). My PC money is gone. So I am sad. The build is gonna half to be put off until later this summer if not early fall to have the cash again. (I was originally gonna do this in reverse and do suspension in fall).

But at last standing I did put together an AMD and an intel setup both just under 400 dollars. Here are the basics and let me know what you think:

Intel (first because I know you're all AMD fiends)

- 3.0ghz HT prescott 800 Bus processor
- Asus mobo
---Supports all 1066/800 bus speed Intels
---Supports SLI
---2 PCI 16
---0 PCI 4
---2 PCI 1
---3 PCI
---2 PATA, 4 SATA 3.0GB
---4 x 240 up to 8 GB Ram
---6 total USB
-1 GB (2 x 512) 240 pin 533 DDR Ram
-Asus Tower with 350 Watt Power Supply

AMD
- Althon 64 3200+ HT 939 Socket 2.0Ghz 2000 Bus
- Asus Mobo
---Supports Althon 64/64 FX/ X2 with 1000 (2000) bus
---1 PCI 16
---1 PCI 4
---3 PCI
---2 PATA, 4 SATA 1.5GB
---4 x 184 up to 4 GB Ram
---6 total USB
- 1GB (2 x 512) 184 pin 400 DDR Ram
-Same Asus tower with same 350 Watt Supply

These Systems I would say are pretty evenly matched.

Intel setup has nicer board with SLI, 3.0 Sata and faster/8GB Ram. But the processor probably isn't as fast as AMD.

AMD Chip should rip some serious [censored] with a 2Ghz Pro/Bus, but board is slightly behind lacking sata 3.0 and using 184 pin/400 ram/4GB total.

The tower is the same with either build because 1) nice tower for price with decent power supply. Also the tower is in a combo with mobo making AMD step up cheaper by ~20 bucks. But deal might not be there when I buy it.

I think at this point either system would work! lol Let me know what you guys think.

I'm an "AMD Fiend" so I naturally prefer the AMD setup, but the Intel is really just as nice. You'd do well with either of them.

The Intel board certainly is more full-featured, but I have to wonder just how much of that you will use. I mean 8GB of RAM. Damn. And SLI too. It's a nice MoBo, but I think by the time you even dream about using those added features your CPU/Socket is going to be out-dated; with the exception of perhaps the SATA3.

As another AMD fiend, I'd say get that one. Mainly because sata 3, sli and 8gb ram (vs 4) shouldn't be the selling points. There aren't any drives out there that can match the bandwidth of sata 1 yet. If you're planning on putting 8gb (or even 4gb for that matter) into that pc then your idea of a low budget is not what I'm thinking of. Same goes for SLI. Unless you're planning on hardcore gaming, sli isn't going to do anything for you. Go AMD.

I'd say in 3-6 months when you're ready to put out the cash this will change. New nobo's and cheaper processor prices.

Also, I'd rather take a whole new laptop for $500 or a Dell desktop w/ 20" LCD for $600 before spending $400 on a box. But I don't game so I don't need much power.

Correct me If I am wrong:

8 gb of Ram
CPU speed over 3 gb

All this technology is a waste for the average home user.

Go with what you can afford...not what you think looks cool.
