Arggghhhhhhh! I never thought I would say this but.....if I had any money or credit available to me, I would be well on my way to trolldom! This is what it did today.....

After idling just for a few minutes, the temp gauge on my 98 Mystique (Duratec w/ 97K) went almost completely out of the normal range. The temperature rose quite rapidly and I suspect it would have continued to heat up if I hadn't turned the heat on in the cabin. Usually the fans would kick in well before it gets to that point but I didn't hear them come on at all. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anybody know of a likely cause?

Also, might be the waterpump has partially failed, worth a look. I've been there, if you look at Tony's links. Test fans, replace waterpump/thermostat, check engine oil condition. Saves on engine replacements .

Unfortunately, you have to remove the pump. My old (black plastic) pump impeller was in 3 pieces, they are known to slip on the shaft too which is the "partial failure". The new pump will be white plastic which is more durable, or metal if you can find one. I used an AC/Delco that is metal.

i think its worth askin if you still have the big plastic shroud piece underneath the engine, the piece that you have to take off to get to pretty much anything under the engine. I took it off last summer and my engine temp went way up. But it back on and it went back down.
