i have always used an old version of sonic that came with my old dvd burner to make a data disc. recently, however, i started getting a burn failed message for a reason i could not determine while making a data disc but not when burning a movie. cd's continue to burn properly. i figured perhaps something was up with the program so i downloaded the most recent trial version of nero and tried again. the first time worked fine but the second and third times both came back with burn failed messages. i saved the logs since nero offered. the funny part is when i turned on my external (and only) dvd burner this afternoon i found out i had left what i thought was a shiny new coaster inside and the autorun feature popped up showing what looked like a successfully burned data disc. to see if things worked (the data was a series of zipped disc images) i unzipped and copied one of the images to a cd and installed it only to find that it worked perfectly. there are 19 images on the dvd and since i don't have the time (or desire) to verify by burning each one i randomly chose one to try. my question is whats the deal? the computer is an old pos p3 700 mhz gateway 5300ls notebook and the burner is an old liteon ldw-401s drive. below i am posting the failed burn logs from nero:
1) first one-

What operating system are you using?
Is it the external drive or do you have more than one? Sorry but it's a little confusing.

i apologize for the confusion. that should teach me to rush. i am using xp pro with sp2 and 384MB of ram. the notebook has a cd rom (g: in the logs) and the external drive (h: in the logs) is the dvd burner. the lack of ability to successfully burn a dvd data disc is a recent development i only noticed about a month ago. i happened upon this problem when i decided to reformat my hdd which meant i had to back up my data, approximately 30GB worth. i have always used sonic only because it came with the burner and it always got the job done. nero i tried just to see if using another program to burn the dvd's would put an end my new collection of shiny coasters, that is the dvd's that failed. the first dvd i made with nero worked just fine according to nero but the second and third dvd's finished with a burn failed notice just like sonic did. the difference here is that nero offered to save a log of what happened, which i have posted, where as sonic did not. as far as i know i can only assume that whatever the problem is, it is effecting both programs.

OK try this. Go into all programs>nero>tools>nero drive info. When that's done click on the tab up top that says ASPI. Then look down the bottom to see if it says "ASPI is installed and working properly". This can become corrupt and need to be reinstalled. ForceASPI Since you recently did a Windows reinstall you may want to run this. It won't hurt anything. You also will want to remove one of the burning programs because they don't always play nice with each other.
One other thing you might want to check is if the cooling fan in you external enclosure is working. It could be heat related.

P.S. Those silver coasters are worthless, they have a hole in the middle.

In troubleshooting the bulk of the work is trying to isolate where the problem lies. One of the quickest ways to see whether or not an "external burner" is working as an example
is test it on another computer. The fact its external is an advantage troubleshooting wise. If this problem or a related one follows the burner thatâ??s easy to address from a warranty point of view. If not then you can dive more into your CPU software / HW side. Just like some on this forum say â??do the cheapest thing 1st.â? In troubleshooting a computer my motto is to try the simplest things 1st. You would be shocked how many times computer uses blow right by the simple stuff.

PS: Iâ??m new here and you people are great. Keep it up.

Good luck

ain't that the truth. usually the first thing that comes to my mind is the most complicated far out there answer and i have to work my way back to the begining with all ideas before i can begin any troubleshooting at all.

1 & 2)done. the nero aspi is installed and working correctly but the system aspi says it is not installed even after i tried the force aspi. i double clicked the instaspi file and it said it installed and i need to reboot. did that and verified with nero and the verification program in your link but both still said not installed.

3)uninstalling sonic since nero is much more helpful in troubleshooting so far as i can tell.

4)cooling fan is on and working. i can hear it spinning.

5)but they make great little frisbees

just for kicks i updated the firmware on my liteon ldw-401s and according to the nero info tool i now have the ability to read and write dual layer dvd's, albeit at a ssllllloooooowwww speed, whereas i did not before. very cool. i am going to try again later tonight and i will post the results tomorrow.

Can you put the drive into your computer to see if it works there?

I'm thinking of 3 things right now:

1. USB enclosure is going out (I have one dead right now)

2. Burner is going out (you did say it was old)

3. Something software related (which is what you're trying to troubleshoot)

I really can't help you with the software, since I have never had a DVD burner... But try putting it inside the case and see what happens.

I had a simular problem with my Samsung SH-S162L DVD burner just recently. Bought it from newegg back in March and after burning 10-12 DVD's just fine I started getting coasters. I used the Nero software that came with the burner and also tried my copy of Roxio, but nothing helped. It would play DVD's, CD's, burn labels using Lightscribe, just wouldn't do a DVD. I tried the ASPI install, nothing. Finally RMA'd it back to newegg for an exchange. The new one works just fine. Hard to believe that it died in less than a month, but it did. Might be time to buy a new burner.
