If you have the $28,000 you could go for the Mazdaspeed 6. It is a AWD 2.3L turbo four with 276 hp... give or take a few. Not a bad little car. I just think that WRX's are too popular and Evos are too expensive. Although all three are amazing cars!
For Sale - 96 Tour Sport 2.5L MTX with SVT Exhaust, pre 98 trunklid with newer Contour Sport spoiler instead of lip spoiler, newer Contour sport rims. Newer paint job. Brand new floor mats. Rust Free! PM me for details and pics.

Volvo S40 T5 with AWD is what I picked up. Can't beat the quality or the styling in my opinion.

Or like what I did. I picked up a 05 Saab 9-2X Aero with everything CSVT has except the moon roof but has factory HID instead. I only did one mod -- change the ECU map. Now it is a much better all around car than CSVT. And if you don't know about it, 9-2X is indeed a rebadged WRX but with much better look. Now you can either buy new one around $26K nicely equipped, or get one with lower than 10K miles for about 21K.
And when you want to mod the car -- the aftermarket support is huge!

K&N intake w/ MAF. Ford Racing 9mm wires.
05 Saab 9-2X Aero Satin Grey. Cobbs Accessport Stage 2.

Everyone has given you alot of good advise. It's hard to decide on what car to get. When I sold highly modified Integra GSR, I looked around for awhile till I found a car that totally caught my eye. My advise is look around till you find that car that you just have to have. Good Luck Bro!!

In your situation, I'd go for a WRX or a Mazdaspeed.

Don't forget about the Nissan Altima SE-R... ~$30K new, de-tuned engine out of the 350Z...
