I have a leak in a pipe going out to one of my outdoor taps. Naturally, it is covered by the drywall ceiling in my basement rec room. It would seem, however, that it is along one of the walls (judging from where the pipe leaves the house) which should make things easier.

What would be the best way to open a hole in the drywall so that I can find and fix the leak? Should I cut with a drywall saw, or could I do it with a knife? I am also looking to avoid any wiring that might be up there.

Thanks in advance.

you can use either a keyhole saw or a knife.
if you know where the studs are you can try to cut right down the center of them with a knife, this gives you a way to put the sheetrock back up easily.
you can cut out the whole bay that covers the pipe.

You can use whatever knife you want just be careful and don't stick the blade in too far if you're worried about hitting a wire. Make a hole small enough so that you can fit your finger into and then feel around and make sure there are no wires there. Then you can start cutting a bigger hole.

Cut carefully, eh? Is turning off the power at the circuit breaker too easy?

True turn off the circuit breaker that runs to any wires around the pipe. You can pick up a dry wall knife at your local home improvement store. I would drill a small hole and use that as my starting point

all wires should be stapled to the stud. that is code. you should just be able to cut right into it. I do it everyday.

Cut out the bad, if any, that'll probably help your view and get rid of the affected area. The saw is easier but a precise man can get away with cutting a square, keeping the peice, repairing the pipe and slapping some wood over the hole and screwing the same peice of drywall back on. Voila!
At least that's the quick and less-hassle way I've found. Why not take a picture?

Yeah, code is a great minimum.....but would you trust everyone who lived in or worked on your house before you bought it to follow it? There is the issue.

I'll grab a drywall knife and some sandable 90 at the Home Depot. It's in a tight corner, but I should be able to manage. It's a burst pipe (runs along the front wall of the basement, and I suspect that the previous owners left the tap shut for the winter, so it should be a straight cut and replace.

Thanks for the tips!
