Linky I personally question this because Iran and Syria sits on the U.N. Human Rights Commission. BUT, if we ignore what the UN says/requests..... what example do we set for nations such as Iran?

Wouldn't be the first time we've ignored the UN, thankfully.
The Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center doesn't decrease anyone's national security. In fact, Gitmo probably improves the free world's security. Iran has said they would like to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth. With nuclear weapons, they would have the ability to do this. Therefore, the UN's interest with Iran is much different than it is with Gitmo. Any comparisons are invalid and ridiculous.

First thing that needs to be straighted out is who sits on the UN Human Rights Commission. Half of the world's WORST offenders chair that commission, so just about anything they put forth is an unequivocal crock of steaming s**t.
Think back to early 2001 when they kicked the US off of the commission; that's right, the US was KICKED off by the likes of China, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Syria, Algeria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, Togo, Vietnam, etc., etc.
Again, some of the most BLATANT and DISGUSTING human rights violators sit on that council, so any proclamation they put forth should be almost immediately dismissed out of hand...
I'm not saying that the US should further sit on their hands about the detainee question, but the UN and the current hypocritical monkies that populate the HR commission should have NO weight in any decision we make.
Now, to address the IAEA referral of Iran to the UN Security Council, of course Iran will try to make political hay out of this...
...but at last check, Cheney nor Bush have stated that they want to see Israel wiped off the map, that the Holocaust didn't exist, etc., etc. There is a MAJOR difference in terms of credibility between what the US chooses to ignore and what Iran chooses to ignore, especially with the topic of nuclear advances.
Finally, Iran even mentioning the topic of "human rights" in a political setting is damn-well near laughable, given their abysmal record...

Kofi Annan is a crooked POS, so I agree the UN has become a joke. As I said before and JaTo underlined with detail, the UN Human Rights Commission is corrupt.
I trust that Israel will not allow themselves to get taken out by Iran, as they've demonstrated their ability to protect their national security/right to exist in the past. Israel's intel is very good in their region, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would have to be backed by some heavy weights to carry anything effective out.
With that said, I don't think the UN is an effective forum to prevent anything from happening in the world today. If we don't take the UN seriously, we cannot expect any other nation to.

Was the UN the council that was set up after WWII, but they didn't include the US... even though we saved their asses?
Or am I thinking of something else?

Guantanamo will be shutdown sooner than later.
It's hurting American image and the ppl in Washington don't have any leverage with discussing China and their human rights stuff.

President Woodrow Wilson urged the formation of the League of Nations after WWI. America was still very isolationist despite participating in WW1, so the LoN treaty was never ratified in the US. When WWII broke out, the LoN had basically become defunct and after WWII, America had pretty much learned that isolationism is not the answer and became a full participant in the newly formed UN.
That answer your question?

Yeah, because detaining people who have attacked our country is the same thing as what China is doing to its people.

ODC, you are correct.
china let reporters in to see detention centers AND interview detainee's. the united states, after 2 years, finally allowed reporters into Gitmo but REFUSED to let reporters see or interview detainee's.
Guantanamo Bay, just like out current administration, is a DISGRACE to the world.
