Hi Guys,
Oddly I experienced the same problem yesterday. I have a 97 Contour with a V6 automatic engine. The OD light flashes after a few minutes on the road. I've also noticed that when driving, the car takes another 2-4 seconds or so to get out of second gear and then lunges a bit and then everything seems fine.
Another add-on to the problem is that lately (within the last month or two) the shifter gets stuck in park and takes a good tug to get it into any other gear. I would assume I'll need a new shifter. The car has been in my possession since I bought it almost 10 years ago and the shifter/shifter assembly has never been replaced.

Thanks,
Mike

I think someone previously had this problem and FavoriteMystaque mentioned that going under the car and putting grease on the shifter below was the solution.

Yes, they do but I doubt they will plug it in and drive around with it. You will probably need a dealer or a shop with a scanner which can read the O/D codes.

Hi ! Tony, Got the transmission checked for the codes. They did not tell me the codes but said that the tranny needs a new tprque convertor, vavle body and drums. Gave me an estimate of $1500 - $2500 and $427 just for opening the tranny. hmm that is expensive. I guess I m gonna drive the transmission to its death. Tranny has'nt died for 30K miles when the O/D light first sarted blinking, so if I am lucky it might drive for another 30k.

BTW is it possible to put a MTX instead of ATX. I have FOrd Contour 97 with CD4E.

thanks,
regards

Get the ATFluid changed. It can only help. And while it is possible to put a MTX in the ATX, it would be more trouble and money than it is worth. Might as well get another working Contour (rather than just the transmission). Good luck.

The TSS sensor might need replacing, along with the trans fluid. The TSS is relatively cheap and easy to put in IF your car is in a non rusty environment. A code scanner costs around 50-150 depending on its features. Try searching the troubleshooting and transaxle forums, all posts, you might find others who had trouble like yours.
