Is there some function to it besides probably keeping mold and mildew away??

Later. Pepse.

no, but it makes a difference on the air quality that blows through your vents. I actually just changed mine today, and was deff, worth the couple of bucks for a new filter.

It will affect the performance of your a/c in the summer if it is really clogged.

While you're there might as well check to see how dirty it is around the housing. Dirt had gotten in and eaten away the housing gasket, so badly that water puddled onto my passenger side floor each time it rained (and I had no clue where it was coming from!).

If you let it get clogged, when you turn AC or defroster on, it works harder, dragging on the engine. Causing lower MPG and power.

So, think of changing it as a "power enhancer".

For the $15-$20 for the filter and the 15 minute install, its probalby worth it... Its not hard at all.

Thanks mean'tour for posting the 'How-to', I was going to ask if there was one but you answered before I could. I had no idea there was a cabin filter.
