Auto trans I assume?

If you do the drain and fill, then take it for a short drive, and the repeat, then another short drive and repeat again, you will approach a 100% fuid change.

Do this process at least every 30,000 miles.

I think RoadRunner and Phil were not too supportive of that long of an drain-interval. I think every 12k miles is what was recommended. As Jim said, do the fill and drain a few times until you get a healthier pinkish color (shouldn't be more than three trials).

Yeah, ancientsanskrit, Pete and I have recommended a very short interval, but we have also admitted that it is overkill. But, we have also stated that one of the reasons for the overkill is because of the valve body wear issue's, which spawn from the poorly designed OEM pistons. If you have Sonnax valves, then the 30K interval should be ok.

Another reason we suggest the shorter interval is because of the fact that when doing a drain and fill, you cannot be sure that "all" of the old fluid comes out.

Starjammir... Your fluid actually looks pretty normal, for old fluid anyway. The dark area you see in the center, is clutch material that is suspended in the fluid. By placing a small sample of the fluid on a white rag, as you have, you are filtering a small sample of the fluid. I have a picture of some fluid that I took from my father in laws Nissian pickup that had 40k on it and looked a little worse than that.

I think you will be fine. Just keep that fluid changed!

I just did this to my SE about a month ago, it had been two years and 26K miles since the ast time. I poured off the fluild into clear 2L soda bottles. The used fluid from the first two (4 quart flushes) looked very dark, the third batch I drained looked much better. Think I'll do this more frequently in the future, inexpensive and easy.

* changed subj. for search purposes.

I knew my ears were ringing for a reason...

I would have to agree that 12,000 miles is overkill,
and 15,000 - 18,000 miles is probably a more normal
range for most.
You don't ever want it to go to 30,000 miles,
even if you rebuild your valve body because these transaxles
DO NOT have fiber filter mediums in them like other transaxles/transmissions.
They only use a screen, and it's only serviced on a REBUILD.

So the only way to get rid of suspended particles
is to flush the tranny, or do a drain & fill(x4)
every 18,000 miles.

trannie taking a dive then? Last I knew you didnt know if it was dying or not... We were having that problem with her mom's taurus on the way up north to our camping trip (crappy trip). RIGHT out of midland the Overdrive light started flashing on that hot a humid day, Strange thing was... The overdrive would only freak out when you used the cruise control.

It's best to have the flush done which requires equipment (you have to go to a shop that does it). Back flushing the ATX fluid under pressure to get the stuff off the filter screen. Other methods will not remove as much.
