i have a cel that comes on in my 98 2.5L atx. it tells me that it is running lean on both banks but the tip of the exhaust is black indicating that its running rich could this be an O2 senson problem?

Code NUMBERS would be nice..

The sensors stating that they are lean (VERY UNREAL to have BOTH go bad at the same time..) could be just that... The sensors could simply be stating what they truly are seeing.. a lean condition. If you have something creating a lean, the sensors will simply tell you what they see.

Look for other problems, not TWO bad sensors at once. I would look for any air leaks after the MAF (TB gasket, UIM/LIM gaskets, EGR gaskets, vacuum hoses cracked, brittle, broken, or missing.

Spray carb starter spray in to different areas, and see if the engine sputters, or stalls. If it did, then the spray made it in to the engine and caused that to happen. You found your cluprit area. (avoid letting the spray in to the air filter area.. you don't wanna create false results!!!)

Anyway.

Look for loose hoses, EGR vacuum hoses on top, etc...

One easy thing is, it could just be the gas you put in.
Did you go to a different name brand station?
or your regular fill up station.

Lean code = engine running MAX fuel enrichment.

If it really is that rich I'd bet you have a dirty MAF or a vacuum leak.

I'm in the same boat as this guy, as far as both O2's reading lean. I plan on removing, cleaning and replacing the gaskets on the whole intake. LIM, UIM, Throttle Body, EGR, and IAC gaskets. What other parts/things should I look for while I'm undertaking this? I've replaced my IAC and PCV already, and I just don't know what else to look for during this process.
