I recently installed a new timing belt on my 98 contour 2.0l, With the cams set in place with a piece of angle and with 1 and 4 at TDC, 1 on compression stroke, The crank pulley marks were set identical to the haynes manual I have. the car idles great but if I do any kind of acceleration "it falls on its face," "loads up." I took the car to Autozone and it tested with the error code p1383 (varible cam overretarded). Is there some trick the Haynes left out?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Has something to do with VCT. I don't have VCT so I don't know what is going on exactly, but there is something you have to do with it when installing a timing belt IIRC.

check my post in this thread.

It may give you some tips, but trial and error seems to be the only way to get it perfect.

EDIT: About those marks on the crank pulley....mine aren't extremely precise. Read my post carefully about how to (most likely) get more accurate results.
