Got a CEL today, old familiar P171 "too lean". Time to clean the MAF again.
That S&B filter they sell with the CTA really does let through too much dust.
I guess that means you need to fidn a new replacement filter then.
I bet any oiled-gauze filter will have this problem.
But I wonder if the gauze on this guy ever got any oil...
I replaced my S&B (damaged beyond use) with a Ractive filter that looks exactly the same.
Cost $30 and its surpisinly good quality Ricer stuff.
Has a better funnel design in the filter that more smoothly forces the air into the intake tube.
I clean it once a month, mostly due to the location of the filter.
Haven't had any problems in 3 months.
I'm about to get the K&N filter hector suggested. I think it's a little bit bigger than the s&b and should be better quality. Seems to be best K&N has to offer out of filters that will fit our MAF.
RF-1047 ,,, outta k&n filters, seems to be best compromise/mix of base diameter and length, and still being able to fit under the hood.
MAF cleaned, engine runs right again.
The first time I fitted that S&B filter onto the MAF, it was a ten minute wrestling match. This time, it came on and off so easy I didn't even have to fully detach the MAF from the car.
yeah dude those gasket/ring things, can be a beast when you first put them on. I found a secret with the Spectre, not sure about the others...the filter gastket/ring thing has a groove that the aluminum piece of the filter rests in. So to make it easy for me to change, I just removed the new gasket out of the new filter and fit the old one to it. Works just as well and slides right back on. Band clamp it down and viola, there it is...only took me about 20 minutes of wrestling to figure out that if I had done the removal, it would have taken....oh...30 seconds...

My old APC filter fit on the MAF real easy.
Electro-Automotive Cleaner
And if I've never heard of that (in which I haven't) what more common name brand do you trust.
CRC Lectra-Motive, or there is one made by Gunk.
I like the Electro-Automotive the best (got it at Walmart like 1 year ago) because it is a low pressure spray.
Any automtive electronics cleaner will do, just becareful not to directly spray the tiny wires in the MAF.
I'd leave the whole thing on? and follow directions? and walmart?
