Recently I had a P0420 pop up on my car, and after doing some reading around here saw that there was a high chance that it was my pre-cats. I have just barely under 80k miles, so I brought my vehicle in with hope that I would be covered under warranty.

Given my luck, they tell me that it is actually a Bank 1 Cat Converter, and that it is only covered under a 7 year/ 70,000 mile warranty since it is not a federal vehicle and CA has something different about it.

This is a four hundred dollar piece or so, in addition he was telling me that now the IMRC is giving me some code. Says it would be a 270$ part + 120$ labor so I said forget it give me my car back, they're going to charge me the 128$ diagnostic fee and not actually get anything else done to my car but a PCM reset.

Am I being shafted here or is this all I can do?
If the codes are erased, wait for it to show up, take to Autozone or Advance and scan it. Then post it.

Many times, P0420/P0430 are "false" codes. Big Jim and a few others have posted that it could be a maintenance issue. Sometimes, pouring some B12 or other fuel injector in the fuel tank can help "clean" up the precats.

As for the IMRC issue, post the code when you get it. We do have a cheap fix for that too (if it is in fact a failing IMRC).
you are correct, I do believe that cars without CA emissions are only covered for 7 years or 70k not the 8 years/80k for cars with CA emissions

Correction on above italicized words. other fuel injector cleaner

In addition, here is a thread for the IMRC issue.

Have that backwards.

Fed warranty is 8/80, CA is 7/70.

weird, CT requires CA emission on cars but we get the 8/80 warrenty

also we had a local member who had a car from Maine and he was only covered to 7/70
