Hey guys, i have a 1998 ford contour lx with the 2.0L DOHC 4-speed auto and 141,000KM's.

The side of the transmission where the pump in has rusted and its leaking like mad when the engine is running, but stills runs/drives/shifts like brand new.

Local transmisiion specialist quoted me $2500-$4500 Canadian to remove, rebuild, and replace the transmission. He was telling me its a big job to do on these cars.

Theres no huge rush for me to fix the car, but theres no way in hell i'm paying more than the cars worth to get a tranny fixed.

How hard would it be to remove the tranny myself and take it to them to rebuild, or replace it with another tranny from a junkyard and do all the labour my self?

I am quite mechanically inclined but dont have an engine hoist or hydraulic lift or any other fancy [censored] but have the tools and the time.

Can i do this myself? How long would it take? What would you reccomend i do??

Thanks guys- Neil
How much of that price quote was materials and how much was labor? I'm not sure on the exchange rate for Canadian $$ rate, but I bet you could find a lower mileage(than what you got) v6 5 speed for the price of the transmission.
