boogity boogity!

got my I-131 treatment today. The first day to the end of my life. /drama
Essentially they're killing off my overactive thyroid cells to cause me to have hypothyroidism, and eventually I'll have to go on daily hormone supplements for the rest of my life.
I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism 5 years ago and the shiz ain't getting better.
Thyroids love iodine, so I took a pill with radioactive infused iodine.

I have a sheet of guidelines for how to interact with people as a preventative measure.

I can't sleep in my bed with my husband for 3 days.
I can't be closer than 6 feet to anyone for a straight 8 hour period. I can walk by people in public and interact with them obviously, but no overly prolonged exposure.
So that lasts for a few days. Then the 6 feet goes down to 3 feet and for a 6 hour max period.
That'll last for a few weeks.
Those guidelines are even more strict if I'm around children up to 18 and pregger ladies.

If I were to go fly in an aiport within the next 20 days, I would have to carry a disclosure statement, and wouldn't be able to fly for longer periods than the above stated.
I could potentially set off any security alarms at certain airports that detect radioactive material, which is the reason for carrying the statement.

I can't exchange bodily fluids with anyone - can't let anyone sip my drink, can't use the same utensils, etc.
I'm assuming that means no sexx0ring either. d'oh
bleh we'll survive 20 days...

anyway, these are all preventative measures. The radioactivity isn't very high, but they still like to take the extra precautions just in case.

I went the extra step and prepared supper and tomorrow's lunches with rubber gloves on. hehe
I also moved my toothbrush and have my own tube of toothpaste and mouthwash (I'm using our travel stuff). I did that because sometimes our brushes touch the toothpaste tube, and we always swig straight from the bottle of mouthwash.

Also! I have to double flush the toilet. hahaha! because my body will excrete a lot of the radioactive material through my urine. We might go the extra step and use separate bathrooms for a little while.

fear me!!!

Awesome. Now you just need some glow in the dark green body paint

Heck yes I'll paint you!

Based on those rules if I were in your situation I would get a couple weeks off of work, especially since I have a pregnant co-worker that I work with for a good chunk of the day. Kim, you might be amused to hear that she's pregnant with twins and finally outgrew my belly a few weeks ago.

LMAO!

luckily I rot at my desk all alone all day, and my cubicle area is larger than most people's offices.
So I'm good to go. darn!

Three things jumped immediately to mind:
â?¢ You won't have to use a light to read in the dark
â?¢ Give a good, long, close bear hug to someone you hate
â?¢ Can you be used as a dirty bomb?

Seriously, I hope everything goes well for you. Sucks about having to take meds from here on out though.

Thanks.
That was the part I struggled with the most. Lots of tears. Mostly thinking "damn, I'm not even 30 yet and I gotta take pills everyday like an 80 year old"
I've hit the acceptance stage now though, so talking about it no longer gets me choked up.
Plus there are people with far worse out there in this world, so I gotta count my blessings.

It still somewhat bothers me that I agreed to kill off a piece of my own body. It's mine dammit, I wanna keep it!
But I asked what were the ill effects of letting Graves disease go untreated and he said eventually I'd develop heart and bone problems. So I chose the life of regulated hormone levels.

btw, all females are dirty bombs. We expell lethal gas.

My girlfriend has that same thyroid problem. She's only 19 and has had it for a few years now. For some reason she can't drink a lot of caffeine (i.e. one Red Bull) without getting sick because of it, so be careful about that. It's good to see you can joke about it now, though. I wish you good health!
Posted By: MapOfTaziFoSho Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 03:00 AM
Wow Kim, that is freaking insane! My mum has an underactive thyroid.

It really sucks and I really have nothing relevant to add now...

Scary chit!!

yeah, from what they're telling me, it's pretty common.
I think even my mother in law has it.

The medical community prefers you being hypo because they can regulate your hormone levels better than an overactive thryoid.
That was the part that kinda got to me though. I've only known older women (50+) that have it. I was told I'd hit that road eventually, but that was before I was sent to a specialist to get treatment. I am grateful that I was refered to the specialist though. My doctor can be sort of a tool. heh

I was talking to some folks about this on another forum. One guy there works in radiology, so he was talking about his experiences with this at work.

I found it kind of interesting. Sorta makes me take the precautions list a little more seriously. He told me I wasn't silly for doing rubber gloves last night.

Quote:

Any iodine-131 you ingest will go straight to your thyroid and can cause you all kinds of problems if it's a healthy thyroid, especially if it's a child. When I do room surveys after a patient leaves from an iodine ablation. One of the hottest things they leave behind is almost always their toothbrush. The styrofoam cups are almost as hot followed by the bed linens. The half life of Iodine-131 is 8.1 hrs, but the biological half life is less. I can usually release a patient in 3 days after an ablation if they take lots of showers and drink lots of fluids. The dose for an ablation is between 100 mCi and 250 mCi. If it's 250 they usually stay 4 days cause that's a really hot dose. I just had a patient released yesterday though that was in for a week, because he was old and didn't drink or take showers, so he had to decay down.

The toothbrush and cup thing seemed really interesting. I'd like to see that!
My dose was only 15 mCi for reference.

btw, my avatar over there:

Also, sleeping alone sucked. The blinds in our spare bedroom don't block out light very well. lol our poor overnight guests.

geeez Kim...You should get a second opinion, in fact, I'll volunteer to give you the exam...it's a 7 hour exam, to be on the safe side

taking a pill the rest of your life is nothing...I have to drink the rest of my life, at least your insurance will cover it...mine won't

Hang in there...sounds interesting,I've never heard of this
Posted By: getsum111 Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 01:36 PM
Kim, good to hear your being optimistic. I feel your pain about the daily pill thing, I'm diabetic taking insulin whenever I eat. I got used to it real quick, especially since there wasn't an option. Keep your head up, and good luck.
Posted By: ancientsanskrit Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 02:39 PM
Yep, you are correct. This form of treatment will eventually lead to underactive thyroid, but this is much more sutiable for doctors since you can control T3 and T4 more easily. Best of luck, you'll be fine!

Dude, I feel you're pain, but there's such a huge difference between your situation and taking radioactive treatment. She has to limit herself from close human contact for like a month. However, fortunate for those undergoing such treatments, it's very short-term.
Posted By: frenchblueC2_dup1 Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 02:44 PM
I understood what getsum meant by the diabetes comment.

My mother in law has diabetes, I know that for sure, and I'm pretty sure she has the hypo on top of that. It's either her or her mother, I ferget.

lol her sister is always yelling at her for what she eats. She always says to her "you're gonna lose a foot!"
Posted By: getsum111 Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 02:47 PM
Yeah, I wasn't trying to compare the isolation, just the part that I have to do something each day for the rest of my life. Sorry about the misunderstanding.

Hey, Kim.

Sorry that you are/were bummed out about this. I have to take pills the rest of my life, too. (SEVERE Hypertension) You'll get used to it, especially when there isn't any other option.

My question is this:

I'd ask you to document your story in pictures, but can you take any pictures at the moment, or will your film be ruined (if you have a film camera, I mean)?

Here's hoping all the best will come to you.
Posted By: TGO Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 04:03 PM
that's fuggin hilarious if she would ruin film just by touching it!

i digital camera should be fine though.

they should have just shipped you over to chernobyl for a week...probably would be cheaper.

this girl i used to know went over there once to visit family...one of the towns around where the plant was, pretty far away but not far enough i guess. She said she was really tired and thought she had jet lag, and her family told her no it was from the power plant.

Kim, the pills aren't that big a deal. I've been taking synthroid and now the generic version of it for many years. Of course, if it isn't regulated just right, weight can vary and sleep habits can be odd. Oh well, just another thing to deal with.

I don't wanna be old like Dougga D!

I definitely gotta work on the eating habits. I'm so afraid of gaining more weight than I already have.
It would be so much easier if I hadn't developed such a love for beer over the past few years.

kim dont feel bad.. heres my case

22 years old
cancer survivor
no thyroid
no limph nodes
only 2 calcium processing nodes (i forgot the name)
i have to take 150 micrograms of levothyroxine everyday
1500 miligrams of calcium a day
and i have also developed a skin condition that causes me to get welps anytime my skin rubs against anything.
i had to be in isolation at the hospital for 4 days and then isolated at home for 2 weeks. i also have a one year old and that sucked the most because i could see him but coulnt hold him. I had to have an ubber high radiation dose.
Posted By: frenchblueC2_dup1 Re: I'm radioactive! - 08/31/06 04:32 PM
man that really bites. Sorry to hear that.

I'm in no way looking for sympathy from anyone since IMO my "disease" is lame. It's not life threatening, it's just a drain on the bank account.
I definitely count my blessings everyday for this being the only bad thing I've got going on right now. I know that people have worse, so by no means do I think that anyone should feel bad for me.

I just posted this thread to have a laugh about the precautions list I was given.

Hahahahah. That's too funny.

I've gotta take pills the rest of my life, too, thanks to my colitis. 800mg of Asacol every day. Yeah, the disease sucks, and it's not life threatening, but it's a bummer that you have to take something EVERY day. At least I'm not on steroids again- you've seen how much my weight fluctuates when you've seen me.

I feel yer pain.

It sure is.

The iodine stays pretty local to the thyroid, since it's pretty much the only part of our body that uses iodine to any major degree. It typically doesn't even effect the muscles, skin, etc surrounding the thyroid.

Can you imagine being a doc and trying this treatment for the first time? Yikes!
