Needed to get this out somewhere.

I got a phone call today. One of my good friends, Jack, was out camping with friends from his hometown. At the moment the details are vague but he evidently got caught in a whirlpool in some water rapids and drowned. His friends there got him out of the water as soon as they were able and took him to the hospital but it was too late. I expect they were whitewater rafting when this occurred, sounds like a thing he would have loved to try out.

Some of my friends had met him late last year through a service fraternity organization, and he very quickly became friends with all of us. He was easily the most active and spontaneous person I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Just in the past five months he had driven 18,000 miles in his new car on various weekend road trips, the most recent being to the Gulf of Mexico. He graduated in December at my college as a Computer Science major and had a full-time job as well. He spent last summer living in his old car (child-molester green Eagle Summit Wagon with no PS, missing first gear, a mattress in back, etc) just to see what it was like, and was planning to live permanently in a houseboat once he saved up enough. He got his nickname "Jack" by just introducing himself as it once to friends when he was a new kid in high school and having them call him by it for weeks until they realized his name was Roger.

To get a sense of his personality, here's an email he had written to the group when we were trying to plan a trip once:
Quote:

Ok you guys are silly, I am in West Virgina now, i just decided to go on friday morning, and we've had a litiny of adventures up and down the east coast, including sneaking on to the roof of the Sands casino in Atlantic City. This trip has no particular destination we are just going where we know we are welcome. There was no planning, just got picked up by this kid Matt who I'd never met before on Friday at 3. We actually havent slept for real yet, a couple of hours in the back of the car here and there. I am sharing this because I feel you guys have a tendancy to over plan then second guess yourselves. Granted I may be on the other extreme and should plan a bit more (all i brought with me was a stick of deoderant and a pack of gum and 50 bucks cash). But just pick a weekend and go thats my advice dont calculate how much you expect it to cost because you know it will be more than what ever you plan on. And as for the idea of flying it is my personal opinion that the trip can be as fun as the destination, but it depends on what you're goin for. Also wanted to brag a bit about how awseome a time I'm having. I hope to see you all on Monday when I get back. Also my sister is going to be in town all week next week so i'm excited she is going to get meet all my friends, so you should all stop by and say hello at some point. Ok thats enough of this email.

Yes I'm rambling, forgive me ... it's all a bit of a shock. This is the first time anyone I have known has gone unexpectedly -- it's a simple though painful reminder of how precious life is. Looks like I'll be driving to New York sometime next week.

RIP Roger James "Jack" Schafer 1983-2006

this picture is from another adventure, he and I went for a walk in a blizzard for the fun of it... holy frostbite!

X3 i know exactly how you feel, on June 3 a good friend of mine was shot seven times by her boyfriend, then he turned around and shot himself in the head. it's still so weird to think about it, definitely very unfortunate. my thoughts are with you and his family!!

It's a crazy world we live in. A friend of mine took his own life, not even 3 weeks ago. Death is an eye opener for sure, and should be used as a reminder, that everyday is more prescious than the last. Sorry about your loss, I know the feeling.

Very sorry to hear about that, my thoughts and prayers are with you and everyone who was close to him. Its such a sad thing to see people that were so upbeat and happy go in such an unexpected way. It just doesn't seem fair, but I'm sure he is in a better place now and thats all you can think about. Everything will get better in time man, keep your head up.

I'm very sorry about you're buddy. He sounds like a guy who loved life to the fullest. If it's any consolation it sounds like he lived more in 23 years than some people do in 60. I feel you're pain as on 07/23 and old buddy of mine and his wife crashed their plane while landing at the Oshkosh airshow. They both died. The shock and pain never gets easyer, but it does go away. Via con dios.

I think I saw the article this morning in the NH newspaper.
I didn't get to read the whole thing because it wasn't my paper, but I'm pretty sure it said he was cliff diving into some water and got sucked up into a whirlpool.

really sorry for your loss.
He sounds like he was a great guy to spend time with.

What a damn shame Seemed to be like a self-less goofball like myself. All you can do is celebrate his life- and understand that life can be taken away in such ease, from anybody anywhere.

Yup that's him. They misspelled his last name. The kids they interviewed were Manchvegas locals - witnesses to the entire ordeal.

Article (Found three so far, this was the most detailed one)

He was quite the adventurer, but not necessarily a daredevil. I was surprised (though at the same time not) to read the cliffjumping tidbit in the article. I spent the majority of today hanging out with a bunch of our friends. The funeral will be in his hometown near Syracuse, NY.

It's still shocking. Out of most of my friends who always plan plan plan to do things, he's one of the few who actually went and did them. Once you met the guy, you couldn't help but like him - I don't think he had an enemy or even negative acquaintance out of anybody he met.

Jack had a tendency to tell white lies, which I heard may have contributed to the crucial moments, in a boy-who-cried-wolf manner. Though he had never done anything strictly of that sort before (boy-who-cried-wolf I mean), the fact that he's a physically strong guy may have incited initial disbelief. From what I heard, it took a few critical moments (not long, but long enough) for his friends to realize he was not joking. One of them jumped in the water to get him but was dragged into the whirlpool himself. Locals got some rope and saved him but couldn't help Jack before he fell unconscious.

It seems that the least deserving souls are torn from us here on earth, it is important to understand and remember that everything in life happens for a reason whether we ever realize that reason or not....especially in such trying times....

My condolences of course.
